what coat for Scotland

OK-some of you may not feel this is an important question...but I need to know what coat to bring to Scotland in 3 weeks. I realize the weather is bound to change, and could be anything when we are there. I think right now it is drizzly and the high is about 50 degrees-or 8-10c. If I bring mainly sweaters, would a leather jacket be enough? Or do I need a wool peacoat?

I would think that warm and dry is good, so would wool be the right material? Maybe one of those water proof coats, micro something? Or just a good raincoat over sweaters for layers.

Ani... it depends on how warm you need to be. A wool peacoat or leather jacket would just about roast me to death at that temp. Take layers with at least one outside one that sheds water. It will rain, it will be chilly, but it will also be sunny and lovely. Have a grand time!

Wool is warm but useless when it gets wet. A lot of people swear by leather but I don't find it warm or versatile en ough.

A micro fiber raincoat with a zip out liner is the about the best you could have.

Great answers! Actually, I wore the leather coat (with sweaters, and sometimes with rather thintops as well) in England and N. Wales last year at this time...and it was great. In fact, some days (even atop castles in N. Wales weather) I wore just a heavy sweater with scarf. I wore the wool peacoat today (it is snowing-14 degrees F) and was sooo hot so I thought I'd double check. Anyway, think I'll go leather (its waterproofed). Thanks again!

If you are planning on invading Scotland and attacking their castles, I recomend a coat of armour.

Ani, I second the vote for sweaters and your leather jacket (if it can hold up in rain). I was there last June and it was cool/cold/rainy/windy the entire time. So layers, as mentioned above, and some type of rain item (I used a small umbrella) should cover all situations. Have a great trip!

Melissa

The weather's a bit on and off at the moment.

It can be really warm and really cold. The answer is definitely layers. Right now the sun is shining and I'm too warm, wearing a fleece sweater.

I would bring a waterproof, tho'- a thin one to put over a fleece or sweater.

Scotland can be wet and cool even in the summer, let alone March. The weather is unpredictable, and it could snow as late as May (or you could have a heat wave, which in Scotland means temperatures in the 70s). The best coat would be Goretex with a light lining, combined with a sweater if it is really cold. If you don't want to buy a new coat, I would bring the wool peacoat and a light windbreaker if you have one. Bringing sweaters to Scotland is like bringing coals to Newcastle. Why not buy some of their excellent woolens when you get there?

Hi Ani
Wool is perfect for Scotland. (Look at all the sheep.)
I wear an Inverness cape and a deerstalker cap (the one with earflaps).
My wife prefers a reversible Aquascutum raincoat.
Our Scots friends advise a raincoat with a zip-out lining.
