Hi Minerva - I remember one of your first posts on here about taking a tour versus planning your own trip. I am happy to see your trip is getting closer to reality!
I think the latest development sounds ideal - you and your friend will probably be ready to add a third (her husband) to the mix partway through. It can be hard for 2 different people to be together so much, as you will be on your travels, so a third person to shake things up a bit is good.
Out of the others, I myself would vote for the picky eater (I'm not a real foodie), or possibly even the tightwad, if she's not too, too bad (you'll know your hotel costs beforehand, and you can always do attractions on your own if she objects to the prices).
I've been on trips with people who are set in their ways, and also with others who do not take any initiative with planning. I think the set-in-ways type of person really shouldn't travel at all! And the latter type either gets resentful that I'm taking charge, or just simply frustrates me no end. (One type you didn't mention is the kind who gets all kinds of weird ideas and inflicts them on their travelmate - have had that too and I can't decide which is worse).
My sympathies on the loss of your husband and your friend. My husband and I travel so well together (actually get on better on trips that at home LOL) that I can't imagine what I would do if I didn't have trips with him to look forward to. I will not take this for granted any longer.
I really admire you for heading off on this adventure. Best of luck and I know you'll keep us posted.

theregoesminerva,
One good thing is you've identified before hand potential problems with certain people. I see too many people go off on trips blind and not thinking ahead and come back never speaking.
You need to travel with people who aren't uptight at the slightest problem, has some sense of adventure, is active and most of all isn't picky or set in their ways. Throw those out right away. The tight wad you can probably deal. The lazy one leave home. The one with no input may not be bad, sure won't complain and sounds like they go with the flow...probably your best pick.
Or you could take them all, get together and rent an apartment...should satisfy the tight wad, the lazy one can lay around on the sofa and the set in ways and picky eater can spend time complaining with eachother.

FYI, I spoke to "tight with money" this morning and I told her about my decision. She related an incident that made me really glad I chose to go with my other friend.
Her last travel companion met a man while they were in Paris and she spent a few very late nights with him. T.W.Money got so disgusted that she put all of her companion's luggage in the hotel's hallway and checked into a single room!!
What about that, lol.
