Hi, Last week we had the pleasure of eating in this family-run restaurant in the beach community of Terrasini- which is a town where people who live in Sicily have summer homes. The beach is beautiful and the restaurant overlooks the water. We sat on the upper terrace and enjoyed the warm night air. The restaurant is called "Casablanca"-like the movie, but the food is Italian and great. The telephone number is 0918683566. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Easygoer

Your schedule seems weird because you have missed out Catania. The Etna volcano is probably the best thing to see in the whol eof Sicily. Palermo in the other hand is not a very nice place.
The fish market, the Etna volcano etc are all places I would include.
Taormina is beautiful!

Maybe we'll run into you cause we'll be there at the same time. Would really love a copy of Elizabeth's list as well AND if anyone has a suggestion for a really great restaurant in Palermo it would be so appreciated. Our friend will be "celebrating" a special birthday there. Would love to surprise her with a really special meal for a really special person. She and her husband really appreciate great food. Thanks to all.

Easy Goer here, I noticed my tread “We’re off to Sicily” asking for restaurants from last year popped up again. I posted this a few days ago and it got lost in all of the many Italy inquires. So it belongs here, with all of your wonderful suggestions. I apologize for not posting a trip report. This year flew by. I promise I will get it posted soon.

Here is our food report. Every meal was fabulous.

BobEastEnder, our itinerary turned out to be fantastic. We flew into Catania and drove through the town before heading to Taormina. We decided to spend time in Palermo and loved it. We were happy we planned it last because, if we went there first, before getting use to Sicily, we probably would have died. It’s crazy and wonderful. Plus the hotel Bob the Nav recommend was perfect.

Drbb – thanks for the Eubes restaurant recommendation. It was our favorite.

Here’s where we ate. I keep track of this mainly for ourselves so we can remember each meal in the years to come. If your the type of Fodorite who doesn't care what we ate, I understand.

It’s hard to rate, because every meal was fantastic. Sicily was one of our favorite food trips. Great sightseeing too.

Taormina - 3 nights

Licchio’s – Via C. Patricio, 10 – Great for first night, service was friendly. Make reservations.

Pasta with Sardine & Capers
Pasta with Eggplant, Tomato and Ricotta (dry grated)
Grilled Fish Fillet light and tasty
Calamari w/capers olives and tomatoes

Trocadero Bar Pizzaaeri – Via Pirandello, 1 – Good Breakfast

Osteria Nero – Vico Spuches, 8 - Great food outside dining, not touristy, excellent service

Fettuccine with Swordfish, pesto and tomatoes
Mushrooms from Mt Etna with baby shrimp
Grilled Tuna with Caramelized Onions
Pulpette, Baby Octopus in a great sauce

Bar San Giorgio Pizza – in Caselmola (take the bus up) lunch with an incredible view & great pizza too

Pizza Ham, Mozzarella and Mushroom, and Pizza with Eggplant and shredded Ricotta

Ristorante L’areo dei Cappuccini – Via Cappuccini, 1 – Suppose to be the place for seafood, the food was good, but the service was awful, Lots of regulars got great service and food before us, even though we ordered ahead of time. Must make reservations.

I didn’t write down what we had for appetizers/pasta but we ordered a whole fish. It was delicious.

Traveling – Lunch at the Agipa Gas Station fabulous made to order sandwiches and convenient

Siracusa – 3 nights

L’Ancoro – Via G. Perno, 7 – So great we went there twice (we never do that). We met the owner during the day, when we were scouting out restaurants. By the second time we were there, we were family. Make reservations. Outside seating under the tent is best.

Mixed Antipasto included Octopus, Squid, Raw Shrimp, Sardines, and Anchovies with hot peppers, clams on the ½ shell, and some fried misto
Pasta with tomatoes and prawns
Pasta with clams, baby shrimp and pistachios.

We let the waiter order for us and we worried he might show up with a fish or something. We were so full. He did not, so it was a pleasure to trust the staff to take care of you.

Pizza Box – Lunch this is a chain. We were surprised how great it was. Across from the Catacombe di San Giovanni

Da Mariano – Vicolo Zuccola, 9 – Cobbled alleyway know for meat (we were ready) Great meal. The owner just brought us appetizers which were fabulous. Make reservations.

House Antipasto with cheese, salami, pepperoni, best spinach ever and an egg crepe with ricotta
Grilled Zucchini with eggplant, mushrooms and grilled bread
Homemade Cavatelli with pork
Spaghetti sautéed in olive oil and sun dried tomatoes.
Grilled Lamb Chops
Rabbit baked in a sauce of carrots and caper berries
Orange Salad with olive oil onions and dried red pepper (again this just came) it was great
Almond Wine & Grappa appeared on the table – serve yourself
Almonds in a crunchy sugar stuff and sour orange with sugar

I suppose you can say no to the extras they bring. They do charge you. The whole meal with lots of Beer cost 68E. We left a 10E tip. It was amazing.

L’Ancora – Second time! Make reservations. Outside seating under the tent is best.

Polpo salad
Pasta with Sardines (best)
Big whole local fish
Giancarlo, the owner is the man!

Agrigento – 1 night

Trattaria dei Templi – Via Panoramica dei Templi, 15 across from Colleverde Park Hotel. We thought with name like that and that it was so convenient to the hotel, it had to be touristy. It was not. Again, great food and service.

House Specialty whitefish stuffed Raviolis with every kind of seafood you can imagine on top in the sauce
Cavatelli with eggplant and mozzarella (local Sicilian pasta) Great!
Grilled Mullets
Grill Calamari – a bit too big and chewy

Marsala – 3 nights

Resort Baglio Oneto – dinner at the hotel (hubby had a bad cold) it was OK

Fettuccine with Broccoli from their farm - great
Veal with Mozzarella and Rocket – very good
Plain Grilled Chicken Breast for my sick husband – blah

Eubes Ristorante, C. da Spagnola, 227
Marsala on the salt flat road – Incredible! This was another restaurant where we ate twice. This was out of a movie. We were there on a Sunday night. Only one couple was there. You had to knock on the door and a little window pops open with a man’s face (like the Wizard of Oz). We asked if we could eat dinner. He let us in. The owner was in the corner watching Colombo reruns, in Italian. Later his whole family came, about 12 people plus kids and they all ate together at a big round table. We felt like we were in someone’s home.
We let the owner Zio Saro Rosario order for us. Again, he didn’t over do it.

Antipasto Mista – “Troppo Freso” fish arancini, swordfish w/ onions and vinegar cold, baby shrimp with peach and oregano, smoked sliced fish, cuttlefish with tomato sauce, calamari and octopus salad with carrots
Pasta Scampi with Gamberini & Shrimp
Homemade Fusilli with Swordfish cubes, tomatoes, capers and mint (they cook the swordfish well done, I prefer mine medium, theirs is more stewed)
Homemade Fried Cannolis - Wow!
Marsala for dessert, of course

Erice – Day Trip

Stop at Pasticcia Grammatico Maria, Via v. Emanuele, 14 for cookies and meet Maria.

Bazar del Miele, Via Cordice, 16 – for anything. We bought prickly pear liquor, melon liquor and pistachio liquor.

Eubes Ristorante – two nights in a row. Same thing we had to knock on the door and the face appeared.

Pasta with Shrimp and a simple salad
This time we went for the whole fish. It must have weighted over 2 kilos (4.4 lbs) enough to feed 6 people. It was grilled over a real fire and was truly amazing. They didn’t charge us much at all. It should have been over 100E, but it was under 70E for the whole meal.

Palermo – 4 nights

Pipi Room - I don’t have the address but it is near Hotel Principe di Villafranca (Bob the Nav’s recommend hotel - fabulous) This place was out of a movie. It was a rocking Pizza place. At the end the owner, gave me a pomegranate with lots of leaves attached. I smuggled it into the USA. I still have it, all dried but still pretty on our souvenir rack.

Eggplant parmesan salad with dried meat and corn (sounds strange but great)
Pizza with wild mushrooms (in season) and fresh mozzarella - Unbelievable!
Pizza Caprisiosa with ham, artichokes, mushrooms and some strange hotdog/sausage pieces.

Lunch – Antica Focacceria San Franceso – Via A Paternosto, 58 - best spleen sandwich with cheese I ever had! An experience to say the least!

Capricci di Sicilio – Piazza Sturzo this place was mobbed and I mean mobbed with the mob. Michael said they were politicians, right. Food was great again. We’ve been so lucky. Make reservations.

Misto Antipasto
Fish and Anchovies Pasta
Swordfish Rolls and Lamb for dinner

Ristorante Regine, Via Trapani, 4/a – We like to check out restaurants during the day. Many times you’ll meet the owner. We did here and it made for a lovely meal.

Seafood Buffet serve yourself
Grouper filled Ravioli
Mixed Seafood Pasta
A big meaty whole fish and 4 big grilled Gamberini

Lo Scudiero – Via Tursti, 7 (the Knight) our last meal sigh! Great Atmosphere and food, Make reservations.

And yet another Seafood Antipasto with squid, clams, and octopus
Pasta Norma with Eggplant
Chopped Fish with Angel Hair
Veal Rolls and Steak with Mushrooms

That’s all folks! Now I’m hungry.
