Wedding in Santorini
We're planning to get married in Santorini May/June next year. Has anyone else done the same thing or seen weddings over there? It looks gorgous in the brochure but I'm a bit nervous because I've never been to Greece before and want to make sure its right.

It sounds wonderful to me and can't think of a more romantic setting to be married in. Check out www.santorini.gr, mainly hotels but also some wonderful photos of the island and will give you an overview. Don't be nervous, you will have a wonderful time and you will want to return again and again.

Positives - beautiful place, Oia's main church is very pretty. Downside for Oia - very little choice for more upmarket reception with structure for over 50 people. <BR>Downside - I do not think you can have church wedding without someone being Greek Orthodox (of course maybe not an issue). When we looked at getting married there, in the end we felt that we could not trust the situation - and my wife is originally Greek. We went to a "wedding organiser" who offered to do nothing - "you check it out and I see if I get a better price for you". My wife just thought it could be one major cock up. Having said that, in the end we got married back in Sydney where her family lives and had all sorts of messing around from virtually every one, so perhaps we should have gone with the Greeks, frankly we could not have got worse service. I guess the key thing is that getting married abroad often presents a lot of problems if you want anything more than just the basics - you will be relying on other people a lot more, and if it is a mess on the day, not a lot you can do about it. (maybe Hawaii is different - so many for marriages get done, but it will cost you). So if you do it - make sure you go out there early and give enough time to talk to lots of people and get comfortable with who you are dealing with. I suspect you may have left it to late for that (like we did).

We got married on the island of Amorgos. You can't get married in a church unless you are Greek orthodox. They made everything very easy for us and it was a fun adventure. If you're the type of person that gets uptight easily and likes total control, don't get married in Greece! ar ar ar If you do go for Santorini, I would highly recommend Oia over Fira. IMO, Oia is much more romantic.

I'm actually getting married in Oia, Santorini this May. When I decided - about 10 months ago - this was what I wanted to do, I first checked out just about every available hotel on Santorini. Rather than go through a wedding consultant, I contacted the hotels directly, probably about 60 in all. Many of them do weddings on their own without consultants and it's a little cheaper this way. I narrowed down my choices and then did a lot of research on travel boards to see which places had the most favourable responses. I also - again, through the Internet - made contact with a couple of people who had been married on Santorini - they were invaluable sources of information. Anyway, that's how I finally made my decision and I'm happy so far with my choice. It's been great having just about everything looked after at their end: photographer, videographer, ceremony, reception - all taken care of. We just basically show up. Mind you, the documentation process has been another story, but it's all coming together, too, and wasn't as painful as I thought it might be. Hope this helps you out - if you like, you can contact me directly. I think it will be a beautiful place to get married and everyone I've mentioned it to always oohs and ahhs about it. I've been to Greece before and the islands are - honestly - simply "magic" and incredibly romantic.

I highly recommend Markos Karvounis, the wedding planner in Oia, Santorini. He has many years of experience, all the contacts necessary to make your wedding something you'll never forget. I've known him since my first trip to Oia in 1985 and can vouch for his abilities.<BR><BR>http://www.idomemories.com/resources/2.asp<BR><BR>http://www.idogreece.com/<BR><BR>http://www.wilms-driscoll-wedding.com/Wedding%20Planner.htm<BR><BR>http://www.frommers.com/destinations...647010002.html
