weather in switzerland alps
going hiking next week in Switzerland and Austria; supposed to be headed to lech and st moritz; we may end up changing our route due to the recent flooding. In general I am trying to figure out what type of clothing to bring for when I am not hiking- is it similar to a new england fall? Will it still be summer? Cool? Hot??? Thanks!

From past trips I have typically found the weather to be pretty nice this time of year, usually around 70 degrees in St Moritz. Of course it would be cooler if you're going climbing. To check out the forecast for current and historical weather information go to:

Hope this helps, have fun!

I just received a phone call from Switzerland. The weather until last weekend was cooler and more wet than usual.
But the weather-forecast predicts now more stable conditions. It will be warm during the days (between 20 and 30 degrees), but you should also prepare for some rainy days (between 10 and 15 degrees).

I am in Zermatt now. Weather is great.
Just got back from Saas Fee where I spent 4 beautiful sunny days there. I took a glacier hike along the Felskin and Chesson glaciers. Weather was absolutely great. Got a sunburn.
Weather was partly cloudy in Zermatt today. Took a nice hike from Zermatt to Grunsee to Sunnegga.
I talked to a couple yesterday that just got back from Lauterbrunnen. They told me that there was still only partial train service in that area. Busses are still providing some of the transportation in the area.
They told me that the rail transportation to Schnigge Platte was not working due to massive mudslides.
Weather in Saas Fee and Zermatt ia tremendous as of today.Just kicking back now at the post hotel in Zermatt swilling a cold beer while Fleetwood Macs Albatross is cranking on the bar stereo.
Cheers

Just came back from a beautiful two day convertible car trip in Switzerland (and a bit of Austria and Italy).
Yesterday, we drove from the Lake of Zürich up through Klosters, a bit of Davos, over the Fluelen to Scuol and finally landed in Sent. Today, we went through Nauders, Reschenpass, down to Glurns (a medieval town in South Tirol) over the Stilfserjoch with its 48 hair-pin curves on one side (total 87 curves both sides), over the Umbreil pass, down to the Swiss National Park (close to Mustair Valley), back over Fluelen, through Davos, Lenzerheide, Chur and back home. It was wunderbar! And the weather was great with only one short rain shower.
We were amazed to see all the bicycle riders going over the Stilfserjoch. The top of the pass is 2758 meters high.

Just had a wonderful weekend in Zermatt
Sat September 3rd I did the Swiss topwalk as I walked from Riffelalps up past Gornergrat. Along the way, I got tremendous views of the Gornergletcher.
Yesterday Sunday the 4th I was back in the Sunnegga paradise region again as I walked back to the Flualps. Great views of the entire area including the Matterhorn.
Weather was great the entire time.
Cheers

I have seen bees buzzing around, but I certainly would not douse myself with all of that bug junk. When you,re trying to knock down a cold beer, those bees can be bothersome, but do not put that bug junk all over you.
Just got back from a nice easy day of light hiking.
I walked up to the Grandegghutte fromTrockner steig. Nice 30 minute hike up over a few rocks, but otherwise a nice walk up.
cheers. I hope the weather remains good for you when you get here.
Right now, I certainly have not had any need for gloves, but pack some gloves just in case.

Schuler, can you tell us anything about the mudslides in Brienz? I've tried to find updates at nzz and swiss info but nothing recent. I have such fond memories of that beautiful little town. My heart goes out to its citizens. J.

I haven't been there recently. I'm sure there are others who use this forum who can better inform you. However, there is some updated info on www.brienz.ch regarding roads. It sounds like this week the road through Brienz will be open mornings and evenings only. Trains aren't running properly yet. As of next week, things should be running more smoothly.

Sorry, I don't know. People are donating money not only for Brienz, but other areas as well. Most people have insurance too, so they should be covered financially. Unfortunately, many people will have to find new homes and deal with their loss. It's tragic.

Yes, tragic situation there in SWitzerland also. I never knew the extent of damage to personal properties and lives.
Tragic situation along the Gulf coast also with maybe hundreds or thousands of lives lost in Missippii and Lousiana.
Too bad that all I can get is CNN.
From CNN, I have learned that George Bushs REpublican policies cause this hurricane. I have also learned that Conservative talk radio (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity)also are to blamed. (SIC)
When this is all said and done, I imagine there will be many people from both political parties who could have done more to help these poor people in New Orleans and Gulf coast areas.
Too bad that I will not hear that on CNN. Too bad I can not get Fox News (Fair and balanced) at my hotel. I would love to hear what Drudge has to say as well.
I am not a Republican. I voted Libertarian, (So do not anyone call me a Bush koolaid drinker)but getting fair news of this hurricane in Europe is tough.
