You picked a great month for your trip. I think October is one of the absolutely best times of year to visit Tuscany. I was in Tuscany for two weeks in October in 1997. I was traveling on my own part of the time and on a one-week walking/hiking tour for about one week of that time. Florence was rather hot and sticky. I was wearing short-sleeved cotton tops and slacks and I felt dressed too warmly, but I might not have felt hot if I hadn't walked quite so much. I felt extremely hot hiking on hilly, sunny trails in the vicinity of Cortona, but felt just right in Cortona in the evening. On another day's hike at a higher elevation (but leaving in the a.m. from Cortona which was pretty warm), it was quite chilly and very windy and I regretted not taking a sweater AND rain jacket/windbreaker with me that day. One day it rained very heavily and a rain jacket with hood was essential, and another day it was drizzly. All the other days were just right--mild, but not hot, a little warmer than "average" October weather in the NYC/Philadelphia/NJ/SE PA area.

I remember our trip in Florence/Tuscany in October of 2002. Warm enough for T-shirts and light shirts during the middle of the day and a light jacket in the morning and night. Nice time to be there.
