Just returned from Venice - the water buses (vaporettos) are very convenient - we bought a 24 hour pass (you can buy 48 and 72 hour passes also) which was a good deal. Otherwise it is 5 euro each ride. We were never asked for our ticket - I wouldnt risk not buying one though, as the fine is pretty high I heard. Easy to get to Murano and Burano, as well as from the train station, not sure where the airport is. Service is more limited, less frequent at night, but still reliable.

Also airport (marco polo) to Murano is by Alilaguna, a diffrent company from ACTV. Alilaguna boats run from airport to Venice via Murano & Murano, except the new Gold line that goes direct to Venice.
