GinnyJo - that link you gave for Anna isn't working for me. Is this her by any chance? http://annasights.com/index.php/about-me

limmy - the Wielicka Mines are a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason - I'm not much on mine tours but that one is astounding - especially the main hall with fanciful chandeliers carved from the salt. And real former Polish miners led out tours and gave brief but good background. But certainly not a must sight.
In Krakow try Nowa Huta of which locals say "Rome wasn't built in a day but Nowa Huta was" - a new town under the commies - Polish Pope held fort here I believe. Really part of Krakow.

kja, my comment was not to diminish touring Birkenau. Auschwitz moved us emotionally (I had two ancestors who transited through there); seeing Birkenau was just not something any of us were up for seeing.
And, as you said, "I suspect that each of us differs in what we would find sufficiently meaningful," in multiple visits to Krakow I have yet to view Lady with an Ermine.

@ fourfortravel -- OMG, I did not think that your comment spoke to Birkenau at all! I responded only to note, as part of the information provided on this thread, my impression that the two sites differed in some important ways and that I, personally, found value in visiting both.
Please accept my VERY sincere apologies if my words sounded like a criticism of you and yours! I really meant it when I said, "I think it is up to each individual" and "I think that's a very personal decision." Statements like that can seem like platitudes until tested at places as powerfully painful as concentration camps -- and then, to me, they take on profound significance. IMO, these places absolutely demand individual titration: EACH visitor should, IMO, be able to decide what s/he will see and when to leave. (And BTW, I was impressed by the sensitivity to this issue of the tour guides with whom I worked at these camps.)
If my words seemed to question the legitimacy of the decision that you made, I can only apologize, assure you that I had no intention of doing so, and thank you for allowing me this opportunity to set the record straight. And if it isn't straight yet, please let me know what I need to make it right. Seriously!
As I understand it, the Lady with an Ermine took a long vacation (and as a traveler, I can't really blame her for that!), and I think her home was remodeled during her absence, but I've heard that she's back and planning to stay at home for a while. I hope you get to see her one day.

Limmy,
Not sure why the Our Budapest link didn't work (maybe remove the semicolon at the end), but the email is [email protected] and Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/OurBudapest...rofile_browser. We did not feel the need to do a Danube cruise after we were on the public transit boat so I can't speak to the difference between the two.
