Warning Sistine Chapel

Having been to the Sistine Chapel on several previous visits to Rome and having endured the throngs who were gathered there as well as the eternal wait in the long line and sun to arrive at this beautiful but hardly serene location, on my last trip to Rome I treated myself to the Helen Donegan after hours tour. Expensive? Yes! Worthwhile? Absolutely! We all choose what is important to us in our travels. I decided that visiting and experiencing the Sistine in this way was the most important thing for me to do on my last visit. I am even thinking of revisiting the Sistine in this way when I return to Rome next June and will plan by budget accordingly.

Well said. Had I more money than I have, I'd likely do that too. The 'worth' of our experiences is a very personal thing and I get surprised to see people telling others their way is not worthwhile.

I enjoyed your irony. One place we enjoyed a lot for about an hour and a half in the morning, before going to see the Sistine Chapel, was The Church of San Clemente, a very old one with several levels, each lower one older than the other. I haven't finished my Rome or Volterra shots yet, but my travel partner did post a couple of shots of the interior of the church, at http://www.pbase.com/mcampbell/image/64256718
A really interesting place to visit. I did take photos in the lower reaches which were darker but had a lot of intriguing pieces, and I want to include this less familiar place someday.

BigBlue, I believe that ticke sales for popular concerts and other events, as well as for venues, are already managed rather in the way you describe: limited number of tickets on one credit card, for instance.
Thoroughly germane to this topic is an article in the Arts section of today's New York Times, re: a proposal to drop admission fees at some if not all museums in France. Note the photo of the Mona Lisa; also some of the numbers: on the first Sunday of the month, the Louvre offers free admission - and gets around 50,000 of them.
