Anyone who suggests Blackpool as suitable for a honeymoon clearly has a major hangup with the place (http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...omment-9154929 ). His posts on the subject should be treated with extreme caution (or better, ignored).

It should also be pointed out that, when it became economically feasible, the British deserted Blackpool en masse for the Med.

Sure - why do folks just make things up without knowing the reality? If they are not Brits who are they - Brits have deserted Blackpool - well except 13 million of them each year, making Blackpool one of the very top tourist destinations still in the U.K.

http://www.visitblackpool.com/highes...autumn-season/

Looks like thursdaysd is dead wrong - record number EVER last autumn for Blackpool tourists - all of them of course drunken lager louts or exhibitionists - sure - even Brits here have a very innacurate picture of today's Blackpool - again the record number of visitors for the Blackpool Lights last autmun EVER!

Yup British have deserted Blackpool en masse! Sure.

Many Brits here apparently have not heard of Blackpool's revival with family-oriented attractions and not just vomiting lager louts - Blackpool is quickly becoming England's Orlando - so many misconceptions - no I have not been in Blackpool for about a decade but I do read and keep up with things - some others should as well.

Now the OP has precious little time to stop by anywhere save a few places but others read these threads and especially folks with kids may want to give them a kid break at Blackpool for a day or so. And if on a budget it has the cheapest B&Bs IME in the U.K. and assume that is still true.

@PQ - from your own link:

"But in the 1970s and 1980s the rise of cheap package tourism to warmer foreign destinations hit Blackpool hard."

"Where visitors numbers fell from 17 million in 1992 to a low of 8 million, they have now climbed to 13 million and Britain's first and greatest mass working-class resort no longer feels quite so neglected."

The UK population has gone up too, making 13 million a smaller percentage. And with the fall in the euro, European trips are expected to increase again.

I don't think not "quite so neglected" is particularly attractive.

I find it very interesting that two of the posters on this thread were very non-supportive when I suggested driving from London to York a few months ago.

I heard every possible reason that would be a terrible idea to include descriptions of the route as being "one massive carpark" to absurd comments about the nature of "stupid American" drivers, and so forth.

Apparently the traffic situation in the country has improved considerably since I made my own post so you're in luck.

Enjoy your trip and perhaps you could route yourself through the Cotswolds for one of the available civics and history lectures.

There are several contributors to this forum who actually try to give good advice about areas and aspects of the UK. I hope I'm one of them.
If they express sincere reservations about e.g, Blackpool, Loch Ness, the London Dungeon and Madane Tussauds, then people are perfectly free to visit them, but can't say that they haven't been warned.

On a more serious note, arriving jet-lagged and driving fairly long distances at rush hour on unfamiliar roads is not only stupid but grossly irresponsible.

Miss Prism, the OP is driving north following a stay in London, not after an overnight flight and they start on a Saturday, not a rush hour.

I hope that I also give objective, sensible advice about the parts of the UK that I know well and in that regard would recommend that the OP avoids Blackpool like the plague. I live 35 miles away from it and if it wasn't for the need to see clients would preserve that distance.

It wasn't the OP who was driving jet-lagged at rush hour. It was someone who was being rude about contributors who had warned him/her about driving to York in those circumstances.
Yes, I agree that you give objective advice. I give advice about East Anglia, but can't claim to be completely objective because I love the area. That's apart from Ipswich. There are a few nice little bits left but the sixties had a lot to answer for.
