Well, yes! If you want to visit the other fascinating islands in the Lagoon, you are certainly going to need a boat to do it, and gondolas are pricey! And swimming in those waters is not a good idea. I was only referring to the vaporetto line most people are encouraged to take: the big fume spewing waterbus that noisily churns up and down the Grand Canal laden with people.

That vaporetto isn't any help in not getting lost. Once you step off it, you've got to find your way to where you want to go away from the Grand Canal.

LOL zeppole - I hadn't thought of that. does anyone swim in the lagoon except on the lido?

as for the vaporetto not being any use of you get lost, I beg to differ - we got lost in the modern housing estate round the back of the ghetto and only really relocated ourselves by finding the vaporetto stop which enabled us to return to " civilisation".

and if you have a travel pass or venice card, it doesn't matter if you're gonig to need to change lines.

I’ve only seen one person using a GPS in Venice. He was a tradesman, going to a job not far from San Marco. I could hear his GPS giving him directions – your classic Venetian sempre dirretto, etc, as he asked me for help. Pulled out the map, and was able to assist him – he was all of 50 metres from his destination.
