Wait time to tour the Eiffel Tower

Does anyone know the average wait time on most days to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower? I will be traveling the first week of May.

I'm also interested in knowing the average wait time. We will be there in early July. Does it make a difference which level you go to (which is best?). Does the time of day affect line length much? What are veterans' experiences and/or strategies? Thanks.

We were there in June and went early evening and there was virtually no wait. It was about 6:30pm.
I would wait until the throngs of crowds are eating dinner or cocktail hour.
No going to the top? Don't even think about it.

If you want to go when you please, make a reservation to eat at the restaurant on the second floor, I think it's called something like "Altitude 95". It's is most guide books. If you have a restaurant reservation there is almost no waiting. You go up in a separate elevator. You can make the reservation by telephone from the U.S. before you leave for Paris.

the last time i went to the tower i didn't have to wait at all. well, i had to wait about 15 minutes for the elevator, but that's it. and, we did have lunch in the restaurant...it was very beautiful and exciting, but the food wasn't all that. but, you're not paying for the food, you're paying for that amazing atmosphere.

There was no line for us first thing in the morning.

We decided to indulge and go as far up as possible. If you only buy to the lower level and decide later to go higher, you can purchase tickets to go to the next set of elevators.
