Volvo Overseas Delivery revisited

Seen a few posts on this, but are a bit old now. Am contemplating doing this as we need to get another car and we need to take a trip to Europe in the spring to appease my mother's new travel bug.

I know that one can "save" money by taking overseas delivery. Is this off of MSRP, or is this off of whatever price you negotiate first? Just trying to get an idea of the negotiation process in buying a car this way. If the "discount" is off MSRP, it doesn't seem like much of a discount. Any thoughts, tips, experiences? Is the discount I can expect basically reducing my travel expense by 2 airline tickets and 1 night hotel?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

It also depends on what you want to see and how much time you have. If Italy or Spain or even France are the areas you want to see, going to Sweden to pick up a car may be a long way off, and you still have to pay for meals and gas while reaching your intended destination. And where is the drop-off point?

I'm not saying that it would not be worthwhile, but you should take this things into consideration when looking at the price of the car.

I cannot remember exactly where this comes but it said the savings on a overseas delivery equated the cost of renting a car during the travelling.

It means there's not a big amount of savings with this method.

There are a number of pick-up and drop-off locations, so it is not just Sweden (although it might be fun to do Sweden anyway). Some locations carry a charge of a few hundred dollars, but I think there were something like 14 different places from which to choose. They advertise a deal now for $199 for two people, 3 nights in Barcelona, 2 nights in Stockholm, airfare and hotel included. Not sure of the specifics as far as picking up and getting from A to B.

Anyway, just trying to figure out how the negotiations on the price work out and when to throw out the overseas delivery idea....Thanks!

What turned me off to the whole idea was that if I made the deal through my Volvo dealer I would have to give him my trade-in, then go on the trip and use the new car, but then when I returned home I'd have to wait weeks for my new Volvo to get back here. In the meantime I'd have no car or I'd have to double up with the wife. Not practical for me.

We are planning on doing this in the future so I've done extensive research on the topic. If you go to http://www.volvocars.us/salesandserv...rseasdelivery/ you will find lots of information.

The discount depends on which Volvo you purchase. The "free" trip is a pretty good deal, but it gets really pricy to pick up or drop off somewhere other than at the Gothenburg Factory Delivery Center. For instance, if you want to pick up in Gothenburg and drop off in, say, Paris, the price for the drop-off is $285. If you wanted to pick it up in Paris, the pick-up price is $785. That is something you may want to take into consideration before you make your decision.

Oops. I see now that you already found the different drop-off prices. Sorry about that!

We went to our local Volvo dealer and asked lots of questions and it was quite helpful. Being about to fly to Europe and have a "free" car for the length of the trip is a great deal and worth the few thousand dollars off of the price of the car, in my opinion. However, we will have problems similar to what Zeus mentions above and will have to try to figure out a way to work with it before making our decision.

Good luck!

Just a thought: With the deep discounts that volvo is advertising, you may do better just taking the 7000-8000 off MSRP on the S80 or the SUV and then buy the trip on your own with total freedom of choice.

DAX, that's kind of what we're thinking now. Looking at XC70, which has some nice deals around where we are, but it may be fun to tour the factory, and hey, when else are we going to go to Sweden!

The trade-in was a good point, but think we would just keep both of cars, then sell one later. Don't know for sure, but a good thing to think about. Thanks, all!

From what I understand, Volvo won't give you the deep discount on cars that are not on the lot. The reason is they got those cars on the lot for much less since they bought in a big bulk discount. If you pick the car in Sweden, that car won't be part of the lot so it will not have the deep discount. I heard that you can only get little bit off if you want the trip to pick up the car in Europe. Somebody has to pay for the trip.
