stop at town of Buonconvento if you like castles, close by is Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore, also 4k from there is Bibbiano castle. they are on the way to Montelcino.

Don't shift your "excited anticipation". You will love both. But it is a good idea to get to San Gimignano early before the crowds. We experienced no crowds in Volterra. The drive between the two is quite short and somewhat dramatic with the rock formaations.

I have to go back to San G on my next trip. I found ceramics I wanted (the town is full!) and they told me they were going to put the new design on the website so I was going to order once they did. It's never been added so I'll have to go back to purchase.
