Best bet would be to talk to the Gondolieres themselves. They're not only accomidating and patient, but very informative and litterally walking-breathing Venetian history books. <BR> <BR>On the Calle Larga XII Marzo at Rio di San Mois (one of the main routes to San Marco, and a major couture shopping area) there's a Gondola station. <BR> <BR>I found that particular group of Gondolieres to be quite charming and well informed!

Yes, it is possible to go to the sculo yards for Gondolas on San Trovaso...there are also numerous 'forcola' shops (Carved shape on the bow of the Gondola) within Venice that are very open to tourists coming in to see their craft. Normally they do not care for large groups, so between 2-6 people would be perfect.
