visiting glasgow

During my upcoming trip to Scotland, I have planned for a one day visit to Glasgow. I have 2 options - do it by train from Edinburgh (we have no car in Edinburgh), or I may use one of the days while I am staying in Stirling, when we will have a car.

My question is this. What's the best way to travel to Glasgow if I do it from Stirling? I see 3 possibilities.

1. train from Stirling
2. drive part of the way and catch a train on the edinburgh-glasgow suburban line
3. drive into glasgow

I don't mind driving in big cities, but I avoid it if traffic and parking are a real problem, and I have no idea what the driving is like in Glasgow, so I've decided to ask the experts.

Thanks in advance.

If coming from Stirling then train is your best option. Services are every half hour and take just over 35 mins. The hassles of parking and negotiating the one way system in the city centre make driving a less attractive option.

You arrive at Glasgow Queen St station which has an exit onto George Square in the heart of the city. Take one of the many hop on hop off sightseeing buses which congregate at the square. Stay on for a circuit which takes about an hour and a half then use it to pick off sights you may want to see in more detail.

Well... thanks!

Is the Stirling-Glasgow line a commuter type line? - no need for advance purchase, just go to the station and get a ticket?

Correct, just turn up on the day and get your tickets. It's £6.70 for an off-peak return and £10.40 for anytime return. Its a direct line to Queen St.

We also have one day to spend in Glasgow, prior to our flight back to the US. We are staying by the airport. How should we get into the city center and what should we visit? Our group includes myself (mom) with my 20 y/o daughter &her BF. We will be at the end of our 2 week visit to London, Edinburgh, and the Highlands, Skye, Iona, etc.
