Having just returned, I wanted to thank all of you that responded on this thread and report back on our experience.
Our eventual itinerary for the Brittany portion of our trip was as follows : Rennnes (1 Night, pickup car next morning) – Dinan (2N) – Ploumanach (2N) – Camaret Sur Mer (1N) – Pont Aven (1N) – Vannes (2N) – Rennes (return car, 1N, train to Paris).
Rennes : A large city but with a very interesting historic centre, this was the perfect start and end point for Brittany, with its train connectivity (we arrived from Paris CDG and left for Paris city using the TGVs) and availability of automatic cars / frontline rental agencies (we went with Avis, via AutoEurope).
Dinan : Very charming indeed, we also detoured through Vitre and Fougeres while driving from Rennes. Also a good base to explore St Malo, St Suliac and Cancale.
Ploumanac’h : The Hotel des Rochers’ apartment was perfect for our group, a picturesque setting along the bay and at the very start of the most interesting section of the pink granite coastal walking trail. We also visited Fort Latte, Cap Frehel and Cap Erquy en route to Ploumanac’h. We briefly visited Perros Guirec for its two beaches.
Camaret-sur-Mer : We drove through Morlaix, visited a few unique parish closes and enjoyed a cider tasting at Kermarzic in Argol en route to the Crozon. Camaret was beautiful (our apartment managed by the Thalassa Resort and Spa had terrific views), as also nearby Cap de dinan and Cap de chevre.
Pont Aven : Touristy, but gorgeous, this made for a nice overnight break (in the wonderful Hotel des Mimosas) as we moved from the Crozon to southern Brittany. Locronoan, Quimper and Concarneau en route were a visual treat.
Vannes : En route to Vannes, we detoured through the Cote Sauvage in the Quiberon and spent a few hours witnessing the standing stones near Carnac (we were able to pull over as needed along the road winding through the major sites, and get a reasonably close look despite the fencing). Vannes is fantastic, and we enjoyed walking aimlessly around the historic centre and port. With limited time to even attempt the Belle Ile, we visited the Ile-aux-Moines (a mere 5-minute ferry crossing from Baden!) for an island experience, and explored most of it easily on foot. We returned to Rennes visiting two engaging spots en route : Rochefort en Terre and Josselin.
Over successive trips to France, I’ve been amazed how diverse the country is, with every region uniquely different from the other. Thank you once again, for making this forum such an invaluable resource for trip planning.
