Mvelik:

I don't suppose we could persuade you to take the time to see Herrenchiemsee, could we?

The reason I say this is because whereas everyone recognizes Neuschwanstein since we've seen it a jillion times on travel posters, etc., and it probably serves as a model for most people when they think of "castle"...I just want to warn you that the inside isn't nearly as "spectacular" as the outside.

The Linderhof is far, FAR more interesting in terms of interior furnishings IMO.

Herrenchiemsee, OTOH, is the largest of all the Ludwig builds (>200 rooms) and it truly does mimic Versailles to include its own Hall of Mirrors. The furnishings inside are something to see. Unfortunately, a lot of visitors from the US pass it over entirely probably because it is somewhat more difficult to reach and probably because it isn't nearly as well-known and that is unfortunate.

If you are into "all thing Ludwig" then definitely consider visiting the Residenze in Munich, particularly the Ludwig carriage collection. This is about as over-the-top as it gets and some of Ludwig's "rides" put that thing Queen Elizabeth turns up in peridically to shame by comparison.

Regardless of where you go, enjoy your trip.

Dukey, Herrenchiemsee was top of my list last September, but I broke my ankle and the car didn't work, so I never got there.

Next time.

If you know when you're going to be there, you can make the castle reservations in advance on the internet. There's no reason not to--it costs a little extra, but nothing outrageous. If you focus on just the castles and you have a car, you can easily visit Neuschwanstein (my favorite), Hohenschwangau, and Linderhof in one day.

Hi mv,

If you suffer from vertigo and can't do steep, winding mountain roads well, enter Fussen to Salzburg via Imst and Sankt Johann in Tirol at www.viamichelin.com.

It is scenic, but less stressful.

Remember that you will need a road tax sticker and an International Driver's Permit for Austria.

Ira - we are interested in the vertigo- free-route you mention. I tried to put Imst and Sankt Johann in Tirol in viamichelin, but the route they show is wrong - going up to Frankfurt. Any guess as to what I'm doing wrong? We will be touring the area on our next trip, and my DH has serious vertigo, so your suggestions would really be appreciated.

When we visited Germany this summer (I'm working on my trip report now and will post it soon), we bought the 14-day Bavarian Palaces and Castles ticket for two persons.

It is also available for one person. It is valid for all the castles and palaces in Bavaria, except Hohenschwangau, which is a private property.

It includes Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee, Munich Residenz, Nymphenburg Palace, Schliessheim Palace (the last two are in Munich as well). You can buy it from any of the above mentioned palaces or castles.

We bought it when we arrived in Wurzburg, at the Residenz there. For two persons, this ticket cost us 36 euro, which is a good deal if you plan to visit more than 2 castles.

You don't jump the ticket line, but you go in for free.
For us was a great money saver, since we visited seven palaces and castles in Bavaria.

Robyn,

One website you can check is www.linderhof.de. Click on English language, then click on Tourist Information on the left of the first English page. Scroll down and their will be a link to the 14day ticket.

Thank you, JoeE. I've been all over the internet trying to find more info on this pass. It sounds like a great deal for only Euro 36,00 for two people!

I checked out the following website:

http://www.schloesser.bayern.de/index.htm

I can't seem to find a compete list of sites that are covered by the pass, but if you link to a palace off this web site, then look under Admission Charges, if there is a link to the pass, then I guess it's covered.

Thanks again. Robyn >-
