Americans do not need a travel visa for Italy, Spain, Tunisia, UK, France or Switzerland. I'm not sure about Malta. Here is the government site that should have the answer though:

Sorry - Americans do not need visas if they plan on visiting for short periods of time as tourists.
If you plan on going to school, working or staying for more than a few months - you will need a visa for almost any country in the world.

Short periods of time..if you are going to stay 90 days or less as a tourist you do not need a visa Larry. I see from clicking on your profile you will be taking a trip that will be around 19 days so no, you will not need a visa..not sure about Tunisia but cls2paris answered your question and posted the website for you to check out for verification. Just one comment, your passport should not have an expiration date that is before three months before you depart Europe.
