Virtual "Fix" Sites?

If you are at home needing to have a virtual Europe experience, what internet site do you visit? I realize this may bring on the whole 'don't post your website' comments. BUT! When you want to go to europe virtually where do you go? Can we check out those sites too? Museums, webcams, others welcomed!

www.google.com!

Seriously, I know it sounds funny because it's just a search engine, but I put in "wallonie" this morning and I'm getting my favourite thing: web sites for individual municipalities, listing all *their* special attractions--the fascinating little things that don't make it into the guidebooks.

Some other standbys:

Paris webcams at: http://www.frenchtrip.com/webcams_and_photos/webcams/

Paris still photos at: http://www.paris.org/Curiosites/

The prettiest hotels ever at: http://www.relaischateaux.com/, http://www.european-castle.com/, http://www.chateauxandcountry.com/, and http://www.chateauxhotels.com/

and I could go on... but maybe later... the process of going through my bookmarks like this is actually pretty time-consuming.

Great thread Danna!

- Quicksilver -

Check out
www.alpinpanorama.de
Click on one of the countries shown on the map, then on one of the red squares and see what happens.

There's a site I found when researching my grandmother's birth region and planning a possible trip there. Then when I posted a question here, two people recommended this same website to me -- one posted in in a response on this board, one privately. It must be THE site about this region of southern Italy, since everyone eventually finds it. It seems to be one of the best sites for this region, has a lot of useful info and beautiful photos once you get into each of the subtopics under the various categories. www.basilicata.com

Try this: http://gens.labo.net/it/regio

Then choose a particular region of Italy (from the map). This site will lead you to all sorts of specialized sites related to the various regions, e.g., regional cooking, local dialects, folklore, history, geography.

There's a site called www.virtualtourist.com

where people build pages about their travels and post pictures. There's crappy pictures but also wonderful ones. Just don't read the tips and advices. Most of them are misleading, innacurates or utterly falses.
