Vienna Trip Report

Just back from five nights in Vienna. Weather was mostly good. First couple of days it was almost hot. Then it would rain a bit and get cool and clear. Rain again and get clear.

Stayed at the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth. Wonderful location and hotel. Front desk staff helpful at every turn. We had a suite, which was really three rooms, so we had plenty of space.

We had wonderful dinners at: Immervoll, The White Chimney Sweep, Oswald und Kalb and Novelli. Also had lunch at Cafe Sacher.

We had tickets to a Mozart concert at the MUSIKVEREIN which was very well done. Also had tickets to the Lipizzaner performance. The horses and riders are amazing.

Found a cool pottery shop a couple doors down from the hotel, very unique items.

Enjoyed Vienna and hope to return soon.

Glad you liked the KE! Does it still smell of fresh paint? Weren't you originally planning to go in June?
Also glad you liked the White Chimney Sweep--what did you have? We were there in September and had an excellent meal and great Austrian wine, but they didn't give us the free gifts as they had on previous occasions...which is a VERY minor complaint.

Dear LisaB
Your report makes me yearn for Vienna! I have also stayed at the Kaiserin Elisabeth and enjoyed the location, the breakfast, and the kindness of the staff. How was your experience at Immervoll? I only had one meal there, but it was a standout. Did you have the "Moor in Hemd" dessert?
Thanks for bringing back memories!

Hi
I'm going with family next March.

How was lunch at the Sacher?
Dressy?

Any other sightseeing recommendations?

We had originally planned a trip in March, then again in August/early Sept. Both postphoned due to work. So this trip has been long in the works.

At the White Chimney Sweep my husband had a pork dish and I had a beef dish, both were outstanding. I had the pumpkin soup which was very unique and yummy. They did give us the free between course treats and sent us home with a bottle of pumpkin oil, pumpkin seeds and a jar of pumpkin marmalade. Can't wait to try them all. We had a dessert of chocolate ice cream, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin oil. Would never have thought that combination would be so good. I bought chocolate ice cream at the store last night and will re-create the dessert this weekend. Can't wait.

Immervol was also very good. I ordered a chicken dish but fish showed up. My husband order the weinerschnitzel, so we shared both of them as I am not a big fish eater. Both were delicious. The best schnitzel we had though was at Oswald und Kalb, it was outstanding.

Lunch at the Sacher was probably more than we spent for our dinners. Maybe $40 US. We each had a couple beers and food, I wasn't expecting it to be cheap. But the setting was great and the food as well. It was not dressy, general tourist type clothing, but it was the middle of the day.

Wish I was there now.

Wow, you report sound a bit like mine! I also ate at the Chimmney Sweep, Oswald and kalb and stayed at the Kaiserin Eliz. Hotel. The hotle was great, wasn't it? I especially loved the breakfast buffet.

Are reservations necessary for Oswald und Kalb or the White Chimney Sweep? We won't be getting to our hotel until early evening and I'm looking for a place to have dinner the first night which doesn't require advance reservations. Didn't want to make firm plans due to the uncertainty of flight delays. Thanks.

I did make resv. from the US for the Chimney Sweep via their web site before we left on our trip.

Out hotel called O&K when we were leaving the hotel that night to go to dinner and they had a table for us.

Have a great trip.

I didn't have reservations for either. if you plan to go during peak hours I advise reservations. I usually eat either real early or real late and can get in without reservations. I am sure if your hotel will make a reservation if you email them ahead.

Thanks LisaB and richardab. What's considered 'peak hours' in Vienna? I noticed that many restaurants are open very late. I didn't want to reserve ahead in case our flight is delayed. Perhaps I should just have the hotel call that evening after our arrival.
