Vienna to Salzburg by train: Is this verboten??
I want to travel from Vienna airport to Salzburg by train. On the OEBB website I see a RailJet train at 10:33, which stops at Wien Hauptbahnhof at 10:48 and then proceeds to Salzburg. The price from the airport to Salzburg is 49 E 90.
But the same ticket leaving from Wien Hauptbahnhof costs half that, according to the OEBB site! The price is 24 E.
Question: Is it permissible to take the train from the airport to the central station, using a validated local OEBB ticket (4E20) and then continue with a Hauptbanhof-Salzburg ticket that I purchase online? Thanks for your advice.

Yes... The S-Bahn from VIE plus the Zone 100 ticket ( €4,20) takes passengers to the Wien-Mitte station (the U3/U4 lines). From there you would take the U4 to Schwedenplatz (no extra ticket needed within 90 minutes) and connect to the U1 to the Wien-Hbf, where you can use your Wien Hbf-Salzburg ticket.
If you can share you travel dates/times I would be happy to parse it out in the system.

Don't neglect checking Willkommen too for those tickets - always cheap and a subsidiary, I believe, and competitor to Austrian State Railways. For lots on trains and booking own tickets check www.seat61.com' BETS-European Rail Experts and www.ricksteves.com.

Fourfortravel: My intent was to take the 10:33 OBB train from Vienna Airport (with a 4E20 OBB ticket) to Wien Hauptbahnhof.
Then I would step off the train at Hbf (if that is even required..!) then resume the trip to Salzburg on the same train, with a second ticket for the rest of the journey.
My question is whether the authorities could challenge me for doing that. I can't find any way to check this with OBB.

I would just stay on the train - you have valid tickets for each portion - can't see anything wrong with that. But read the conditions of use on your Salzburg ticket - and if no controller comes thru before Westbahnhof - not unusual I think - then no problem at all.
Try calling or emailing OBB:

You can stay on the RailJet when you have both tickets.
If you have a seat reservation for the leg from Vienna main station to Salzburg, it will not yet be valid on that short hop from the airport to main station. But I've never found those RailJets to be crowded when I used them to get from the airport to the city. If your reserved seats are vacant, you can obviously occupy them.
And I would also get that €4.20 ticket in advance on the web at oebb.at - just like you will do with your long-distance ticket to Salzburg (choose day, time and train).
Neither ticket needs to be valided or stamped when you buy them in advance and choose a specific connection.
Last week, I discovered that they got rid of one of the ticket machines at Vienna Airport train station. So the remaining machine had quite a line (was no big issue for me since I buy my local tickets for Vienna always with the ÖBB app, but not sure I would have made it for next train to Vienna if I had to wait in line).
After leaving the baggage claims area thru the color-coded customs exits, keep left and follow the "train" icon (and not the "CAT" (airport train) icon!) from arrivals level one level down via a long ramp to the train station (which is underground).

I inquired with ÖBB and after several days, I got a reply: Yes, it's legal to ride with 2 tickets, so as to reduce costs.*
But for about the same price, we bought Westbahn advance tickets departing from Wien Hbf - a faster service that got us to Salzburg a bit earlier.* *
We took an ÖBB train (4€20) from VIE to Wien Hbf.
Btw, we also returned to Vienna (Wien Mitte) on a Westbahn train, with advance-purchase tickets.*Everything worked out very smoothly. Thanks to other posters for the helpful advice.
