Vienna to Melk Day trip transportation
Hello!
I will be spending Christmas in Europe and I'm still planning the transportation portion of my trip.
One of the cities is Vienna ( 3 full days) and I was thinking a day trip to Melk and Krems.
I'm a little confused about the train schedule. I've read that the combi ticket is out of the question during Winter.
I went to the http://www.oebb.at/ website but which place I should select as my arrival station?? From Wien to ?
Then, how I get from Melk to Krems and back to Vienna?
Thanks in advance!

If the combi ticket is not out of the question in winter you can still I think perhaps you can still buy a combo ticket for train transporation to Melk and the entry fee to the wondrous Melk Abbey - look for the skeletal remians of previous brothers in glass cases!
In summer when boats are running you would take a boat from Melk to Krems but by train it is not possible to go directly but to b backtrack from Melk to St Polten then take a sideline train over to Krems and from Krems back to Vienna directly but to a different station the Josef Franz Bahnhof if I recall correctly - no need to buy those train tickets in advance - commuter trains with largely flat fares - unless there is some regional pass around. There may well be buses along the Danube between Melk and Krems but I have no knowledge of that!

The combi ticket is available when the Danube sightseeing boats ( Melk- Krems ) are operating.
This is April- the end of October.
This combi ticket includes train Vienna to Melk - Melk Abbey admission - boat trip Melk to Krems - and return trip via train from krems to Melk.
You can still make your way easily by train from Vienna - Westbahnhof to Melk.
train info
eee.oebb.at
some journeys require a change of train in St. Polten- others are direct - this can be found on the schedule on the above site.
In winter periods the Abbey has limited tours.
Times and added info can be found at
www.stiftmelk.at
Te Abbey has been renovated in the past few years and makes for a nice tour with excelent Danube views.
Certainly worth a visit - a restaurant there also .
Walking time from the Melk train station to the Abbey takes 10- 15 minutes .
If making this trip - you will find a bus ( route # WL1 ) making the trip from Melk to Krems about one time per hour.
Various stops in Melk and probably best to take the bus into Krems arriving at the train station.
The bus trip passes many nice villages in the Wachau area along the Danube - Spitz- Weissenkirchen Dürnstein - terracesd wine gardens and nice views ton the Danube -
Numerous castle ruins on the way also.
This bus much nicer and much more intersting than the train Melk - St. Polten- Krems - nicer scenery and faster also.
Krems center just a 5 minute walk from the station- fine old buildingd , wine museums , Churches , pedestrian shopping zone and Christmas markets . Good choice of dining also.
www.krems.at
first saturday of the month - a nice antique/ flea market - Friday and Saturday a farmers market -
Trains from Krems to Vienna can be found about 1 per hour. Most often these are double decked 4-5 cars with adequate seating room.
This train arrives back in Vienna in about 1 hour at the Franz Josef Bahnhof .
In front of the station you find streetcar " D" that runs directly inton the city center - Ringstrasse area in 10 minutes or less.
Investigate the EinFach Raus ticket if planning to travel by train on this route .
28 euro for 2- 5 persons travelling together - Regional trains only and travel after 9 weekdays - no time restriction on weekends. These regional trains have no reservation - but you can always find a seat.
This one ticket would permit the train Vienna to Melk and Krems to Vienna -
If visiting in early December - also look to make a visit to Stift Gottweig just south of Krems - Not just a fine Abbey, Church and tour of various rooms, fine views but a Christmas market too for several days with a group of fine artisans
