Vienna/Switzerland Rec.
Hi! My husband has a conference in Vienna for 3 days and then will have to fly to Switzerland(Morges)for some follow up work. We have a week(full 7 days) free before hand to do whatever we want. My husband has his airfare paid for..however, we have to pay for mine out of our pockets. Any recommendations for an itenarary prior to the Vienna Conf.
We have contemplated the idea of going to Venice or back to Paris...or even just flying into Switzerland and stopping in random cities on a train ride to Vienna. Your thoughts?

Vienna is a good gateway for Central European ciites like Prague and Budapest (and other areas in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary). You should use this opportunity to visit those places. Save Venice and Paris for another trip.

Hi Grett,
Sorry, I have no ideas for activities around Vienna --
I just wanted to sit up and say how **jealous** I am about your trip to Morges!! I fell in love with the town when I spent a day there in May 04, and I bet you will too! It's a small, quaint town with a cobbled, pedestrian-only main street that's lined with patisseries & shops; it has a beautiful flowered lakeside promenade; and it has a beautiful lakeside park where their tulip festival takes place. The tulips were still beautiful in May.
You'll have a blast!!

You might want to look at the amount of time you will need to travel by train from Zürich to Vienna: 9 hours.
Trains leave Zürich at 9:40 and 13:40.
The train goes through Salzburg, which would be a nice stop for a couple of days.
Why not fly to Vienna and then go to Salzburg for a three days and then go to Budapest for perhaps 2 days.
That way you would not be spending so much time on the train.
I have taken that trip, and I found it rather uneventful.
Or you might go as far as Innsbruck, get off, rent a car, and drive around a big. If you stay in Austria, it is my understanding that you can drop at a different location at no extra charge.
I know from experience that the Avis offices are fairly close to the train stations in both Innsbruck and Salzburg.
We walked to both in pervious years.

"Uneventful"?
I've taken that route several times. I think that the Zurich-Innsbruck leg is one of the most scenic trips anywhere.
Go for it. Maybe stop off in Salzburg. And, after a couple days in Vienna, take a day trip over to Bratislava for some old-fashioned cafe society.
