I am going to Vienna for the first time this summer. What do you think about staying outside the city center? Is it worth it to spend a little more on lodging to get the experience of the city center?

I found a very affordable apartment rental about 15 minutes outside the city center on Kettenbrückengasse near Naschmarkt and Schubert Sterbehaus. It is called Haus1. I am interested in the studio apt 'Top 29.' Has anyone ever stayed in this apt or have any experience with Haus1? I am most interested in legitimacy of the operation and cleanliness of the apartments.

I found another, slightly more expensive apt using www.vacation-apartments.com, a website that allows you to rent directly from owners. Does anyone have any experience with this website?

Also if you have any good recommendations for apartment rentals near/in the city center that costs about Euro 99/ night I would very much appreciate it.

If you're at all a walker, the Naschmarkt is not that far south of the city center and there's lots to see between the Naschmarkt and the walk up to St. Stephen's, for example. Sorry, can't comment on the apartment or the rental service as I've only stayed in hotels and pensions in Vienna. In fact, although you would not be inside the Ring, I think of the Naschmarkt area as in the center of the city.

I know that this is not Vienna directly, but we just spent 4 nights in Krakow in a B&B/apartment about 10 minutes outside the city centre and by the 2nd day, we were heartily fed-up with walking up and down the same length of street. I'm sure that it contributed to my blisters and I know that it contributed to DH's occasional bad temper.

so for the sake of [relatively] a few euro, I would stay in the most central place possible.

I'd also consider the Naschmarkt area as "central".
The website of Haus1 says that there is a bus stop 1min away. So no need to walk all the time if you don't want to.
And you might want to use public transportation anyway to visit the sights which are outside the Ring, i.e. Schloß Schönbrunn, Hundertwasser mansion, Liechtenstein museum, Grinzing, Central Cemetary, or the Prater.

Kettenbrückengasse is a good location. You can walk into the center, but it will be very convenient to take the U-Bahn from Kettenbrückengasse station. Besides, the Naschmarkt is an attraction in its own right, with an antique market (we once bought there our art nouveau bedside lamps).

I'm not sure if you can stay under 99 Euro a night in the summer but it's in a prime location, just like half a block from the Grabben.

You could walk to most sites, although they have a Sweet Vienna package which includes a metro pass as well.

The Naschmarkt/ Kettenbrücke area is not central/ center of Vienna. Most all would consider the First District- that area inside the Ringstrasse as the city center. This can be easily identified by the postal code 1010.

This central area is much better for tourists with easy access to many sights by a short walk- many restaurants of all price ranges to choose, good shopping and just exploring the old streets.You save much time being in the center of things.
Why stay outside of the city center when there is no need for this.

I stayed in Haus1 and had a very positive experience. Very professional and friendly staff. The apartment (Top30) was very clean with comfortable furnishings and nice decor. I would recommend Haus1 for anyone who wants more affordable accomodations than staying in the city center and doesn't mind the walk/subway ride to the center. In addition, there are sights near the apartment, such as the Belevedere palace and Naschmarket, and walking to Mariahilfer (good shopping street) was a pleasant walk.
