Vienna Heurigens (Wine Bars)
I will be in Vienna for 2 nights this month staying at the Ambassador Hotel and would like to visit a couple of the wine bars. Please let me know of your favorites! We don't mind taking public transportation to the outskirts where many of them seem to be. Any other advice for a two day stay would also be appreciated.

Hi--I just got back from Vienna last night (trip report coming later today) and had an excellent dinner at Morwald, the restaurant in the Ambassador hotel.
Fortunately, there are several nice wine bars right by your hotel!
The restaurant zum Weissen Rauchfangkehrer (also near your hotel) has a very well considered wine list of Austrian wines and will discuss them with you--you may want to try glasses of a few different wines at dinner there and then pick up the bottles you like best. The Meinl upscale food market at the end of the Graben has a good Austrian wine collection.

I think this gentleman has "Heuriger" in mind, which is not your regular wine bar. The popular quarter in Vienna for Heurigers is Grinzig, which you can reach by public transportation from town (when I was there many years ago it was a tram).

I agree with the last post that eurotraveller refers to the heurigers.
They are a Vienna institution.
Grinzing can be reached by taking tram line 38 to the end station. Many heurigers can be found ,but they cater mostly to tourists. Some have nightly music. The best,to me, is Martin Sepp ( tram 38 to end station exit tram-turn left on Coblenzgasse and walk about 300 meters- it is on right side.
I prefer the heurigers in Neustift am Walde( another Vienna district)fewer tourists, better wine and food with many open gardens in good weather.
Take Tram 38, transfer to bus 35A to station Neustift-one stop from the end.Or just take a taxi-about 10 euros.
Some names in Neustift- Fuhrgasser- Huber,Wolf, Zeiler. But just take your time and look at several and decide wich is best for your. Many are near each other, you have a good choice.
Try the " Most" or" Sturm" the fermenting newly pressed grapes. Wines can be ordered by the glass or "viertel" a 1/4 liter. It is a good way to sample the wine.
I would also recommend Morwald at the Ambassador. It is not inexpensive but good.

sorry Martin Sepp is
www.zummartinsepp.at
Also Fuhrgassl-huber web-site has good directions in english.
"Hauerkuchl" just next to Fuhlgassl -huber and immediately at the bus stop has excelent food from buffet or menu.
If the weather is good, and it is still open when you visit, eat and drink in the garden.
If you feel like walking ,the vineyards are just above the heurigers in Neustift.

Many years ago we went to a Heurigen--I believe it was the Wolf that molker mentions. The wine bubbled in the large beer steins they served it in. The roast pork melted in our mouths. Everything was so jolly that it took us two days to recuperate. you'll love it.

When we lived in Vienna, the Weinbottich, Cobenzlgasse 28, was our home away from home. Last year, when we visited Vienna, the Weinbottich was closed, so we tried the Hauermandl just down the street. It was also quite good, with two strolling musicians to add to the ambience.
There are many fine heurigers in Grinzing as well as in Neustift if you have time to go further. I'm sure you will have a great time.

I also agree with molker. We have been to Zum Martin Sepp and found it a good(if touristy) place for food and drink.
There is also Mayer Am Pfarrplatz in Heiligenstadt: http://mayer.pfarrplatz.at/
As a matter of fact you will find many in Heiligenstadt that are a lot less touristy. Heiligenstadt also has one of Beethoven's many homes and is quite close to downtown Vienna. Sievering also has many Heuriger that are pretty much where you will find the locals and few tourists. Explore taste and enjoy!
