I am travelling to Vienna for 3 nights with DH and my 2.5 yr old - reaching via train during last week of may. I have been looking at hotels and apartment rentals and am confused about which district to stay in (1-22)?. I understand that district 1 (innere stadt) would be very convenient but it's little too late to find anything in our price range there (~100 euro/night).

Here is what's importent to us:
- Proximity to the train/bus/tram
- Proximity to city center
- Safe neighboorhood

Can someone please offer suggestions?

Also, has anyone heard of or stayed at "hotel casa d'oro" (www.pensionluciani.com). Is it good?

We always stay at the Admiral Hotel, a nice, reasonably priced hotel behind the Museum Quarter off Mariahilferstrasse. It is a short walk to the Ringstrasse, the trams and Ubahn.

It may be a little over your price range, but you can contact them for a firm price for your dates.

casa d oro looks nice but I doubt its in your price range. Anyway, close to castle Schoenbrunn, next to underground station and with this just a few minutes to downtown.
Check wien.info for available hotels. What I found in district 1 (close to river Donau, underground and Stephans cathedral) is Pension Dr. Geissler.
All districts from 2 to 8 are close to downtown (zip code 1020 to 1080).
By the way, Vienna is having a very good public transport system with an underground, streetcar or bus station at virtually every corner.

i have stayed at best western harmonie hotel. really nice, functional convenient place next to D tram.

lots of restaurants nearby, too, plus supermarket.

should be in your price range.

Vienna has more than one main train station, so "proximity to the train" can vary.

That said, there are several perfectly ok hotels along or near MariahilferStrasse that might have vacancies in your price range. The NH, for example, has run specials at that rate. The Mariahilfer Strasse area has good transit links, and quite a few moderately priced restaurants (there's even a bagel place). Have you checked the Ibis Wien Mariahilf? It will never win awards for charm and style, but it's clean, comfortable, and definitely in your price range. And the location is safe (I stayed just down the street for several nights) and it's close to mass transit.

Also, if you are comfortable using Priceline, you might try a bid with them. It's not at all uncommon to get the Vienna Sofitel for 100€ per night or less. The Sofitel is a solid hotel, comfortable rooms, AC (very unlikely to be needed in May, but you never know), close to the Ring.
