another vote for the Versaille "passport" if you want to see more than the chateau. We did take the tram, but on my next trip, I'd love to rent a bike and ride around the property (which since the tram was sort of slow and you had to wait for it might actually be more efficient). The grounds are a beautfiul place for a picnic, as well.

Remember, the Forfait Loisir for Versailles includes the audio guide, which you can get right after you security, after you enter the palace of Versailles.
Remember to keep your ticket for the duration of your visit. It is your ticket to almost everything on the grounds, except for transportation within the grounds.
Also, there are podcasts on the site you can download.

Make sure there is not a strike brewing. When we went in November, the civil servants decided to sympathize with the Metro strike. When our bus arrived from Paris that morning we and all the other tourists were turned away.
We did get to see the grounds though, so it was not a complete waste.

We are staying in Versailles for a couple nights, so we don't need the train portion of the ticket.
Looking at the Forfait Loisirs package price, even if we discarded the train portion of the tickets, the price would still be less than purchasing at the chateau.
Great deal! Thanks.

Reminder: distinguish between the "ticket-buying" line, and the"entrance" line. If entry procedures haven't changed since my May '07 visit, veer left in the courtyard to purchase tickets/passes; or, join the right-hand line to enter the palace.

Question, if anyone is still reading...we are staying near Les Halles Chatelet Station. What would be the best way for us to get to Versailles? Do we need to go over to Orsay? Or can you catch the RER from where we are? Thank you.
