Several years ago we went to Versailles on a Sunday afternoon and the fountains were turned on for half an hour , supposedly the only time they were on all week. It was probably around three or four o'clock. They were beautiful, very worthwhile seeing.

Thanks Sally! I verified this at the http://www.chateauversailles.fr/ website. They turn the fountains on twice every Sunday, once at 11:30AM and a second time at 3:30PM. Can't wait to see this.

I read Daniel's earlier posting about Versailles and thought I wouldn't say anything, but now I have to.

I think the fountain in Versaille of Neptune (correct me if I'm wrong) rising from the sea in his chariot is my favorite statue/sculpture/etc. in the entire world. I must have been lucky because it was on when I visited it. I must have spent an hour just looking at it .

Andrew

Andrew, I have to agree with your feelings about Versailles. Just having looked at the pictures in their website and my guidebooks I can only imagine how magnificent this palace is and cannot see how you can be dissappointed by visiting it. I can't wait to see the Neptune fountain. It reminds me of the Trevi Fountain in Rome which has a similar theme of Neptune rising out of the ocean in a carriage, and people sit around it to spend hours looking at it and socializing.

I am another fan of Versaille. The first time we went we spent the whole day in the grounds from 10am-6pm.I thought the gardens and the fountains were incredibly beautiful. We found lots to look at in the details of the fountains and statuary. It was July and the flowers were lovely.
The second time we went we devoted time to the palace.Again we there all day from 10am-6pm.The palace is magnificent.I was gob struck looking at the sheer opulence of everything. The money that must have been spent is unimaginable.I enjoyed the guided tours also.
Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to be a princess.I have never quite grown out of it.At versaille I could indulge my sick fantasy of imagining being a princess.
I think that people should definitly read the history before they go.This makes it twice as interesting.
We saw the fountains turned on both times we were there.Mozart was played at the same time.He is my favourite composer. It was an absoloute treat
