I was at Versailles in April about 2 years ago and the fountains were on. I believe they are only on at certain times during the day, I don't know if that's how it is all year or only that time of the year.

The fountains don't seem to be running at least Jan-March, according to the Chateau website. I tried to do the advanced calendar search but it wouldn't cooperate.
The Latona fountain (at foot of the steps heading down toward the canal) was stripped down for repairs in October.
I've been to Versailles 3 times, never yet have seen the fountains. Nonetheless, it is beautiful, especially outdoors (the fall colors this past October were spectacular); don't let lack of fountains keep you away.
Lunch at la Flotille was very nice, too.

Why don't you go to the Versailles web site and find it out yourself? They have published their calendar up to middle March:

http://www.chateauversailles.fr/

I was under the impression that the fountains are only used on Sundays for a brief time. Not sure if it's year round though.

The fountains at versailles are nice to see, but if you are there at a time when they are off, don't worry you aren't missing much. Hundreds of years ago when they were built they were wonders, but today, there are much better fountains in mundain places like los vegas.

The fountains are on every Sunday from April to October. They are turned on at 3.30pm.

Modern fountains in tacky Vegas are no substitute for the beauty & grandeur (not to mention history!) of the fountains in Versailles - its an amazing experience wandering around with the strains of classical music in your ears which transports you back in time....
Do check exactly what week in April they start as it may not be the first Sunday of the month (I know they finished for the year in the first week of October in 2001).
