Hello! I will be traveling to Italy on my honeymoon next Aug-Sep and will make a two night stop in the Cinque Terra. I have been told to stay in Vernazza. We are not as concerned with view, although that would be great and prefer a B&B or hotel over renting rooms. I am looking for a good value and any suggestions are welcomed! Thank you in advance.

hotel barbera. Swiss woman with an impeccable accomodation. Narrow spiral staircase leading to a neat little common room with 4 rooms off of it. This is a cllimb but results in the cleanest room in all of Italy. Shared shower/bathroom (private when you are in it). See Rick Steves Europe for another description, better than I can give you.

Who has told you to stay in Vernazza? That is the most touristy of all the 5 towns in the Cinque Terre. Granted it is a charming town, however, the prices there are higher than in any of the other towns for everything...Monterosso and Riomaggiore are just as nice too!

I was in Vernazza in September, 2004, it was overrrun with American tourists and had no charm whatsoever that I could see.

I would stay in Rapallo or Santa Maria Lighure and visit the CT by train if that is something you really want to do. For us, we spent less than an hour there before moving on.

More and more people are deciding that staying in the CT villages is too "touristy." We like to be tourists, but we don't want any more of those people anywhere around us. For me, I found a solution in the lovely coastal town of Lavagna, where you can catch a train and be in the CT in about 20-30 minutes. Lavagna has a nice old town shopping area, a great outdoor market, a beautiful cathedral, and the most amazing cemetery (if you like those things). For a good deal on a pleasant hotel, consider the Hotel Valentino, where you can rent a room with a view over the Mediterranean. Good luck.
