Venice, Tuscany, Rome
I am thinking of driving from Venice to Rome so I can stop in the Tuscany area. Thought of doing this in 2 days. Is a vehicle the best option or by train? (First week of August). Or, is it better to take the train back to Rome from Venice and do day trips (3 days available)?

Sorry to hijack your thread, Miami; but bobthenavigator: Would you then recommend doing exactly the opposite going the other direction from Rome > Tuscany > Venice? IOW, train to Orvieto, car in So. Tuscany for a period of time, then train from Siena to Venice?

Hi
Be sure to book Eurostar trains. teh other ones will stop along the way and a 2.5 hour ride (Venice-Florence) can easily turn into a 6 hour ordeal. Also, some of the cheaper trains doesn't have AC. Iwill go from Venice to Florence and use Florence as a hub. You can go to Siena and back in the same day (3 hour driving each way)

If I already had the car I would just go ahead and drive to Venice--no reason to mess with trains in that case. You drop it at Piazzale Roma as you enter Venice by the causeway.
The Italy train system is trenitalia.com --it is the only train system, other than a few local private lines. The Eurostar train is a type of service on that line---the faster and better trains with reserved seating.
