We will have one full free day in Venice and plan to spend it in Murano.

I've read as much as I could about going to Murano but one thing everyone seems to forget is that most tourists does not know their way around Venice.

So as not to waste time, can someone tell me what is the shortest street route to go from Piazza San Marco to Fondamente Nuove to get the vaporetto 41?

Pls name the streets to use. How long will it take?

Sad news; there is no easy way to get to Fondamente Nuove! I am afraid you will get lost no matter what. Your best bet is to take the vaperetto to that stop and don't even try to walk it. I can walk there after 10 trips to Venice, but it is always slightly different!

I don't think you will want to spend a full day in Murano-take in Burano and Torchello, also. Be sure to get to Torchello before the church closes at 5, so you can see it.

I agree, it will take you longer to walk this. You can take the 41 or 42 from san Marco to Murano, I just did this Saturday. I believe there is at least one other line with less stops, but I can't remember the number exactly, hopefully someone else will know (5 or 13 maybe ???). With the 41 or 42 you are looking at about 45 minutes from San Marco.

With that said, and with only 1 day in Venice (I was there over a week) I wouldn't go to Murano, I didn't like it nearly as much as Burano.

I seem to remember that Bayley knows Venice quite well from several visits, true? Or was it a near-namesake of yours named Bailey? I'm not sure... but if the answer is yes, you'll be able to follow my directions (you KNOW that it's impossible for everyone to name EVERY lane along the way): Calle Larga S. Marco - Ponte de l'anzolo - Casselaria - Campo S. Maria Formosa - Campo S. Marina - turn right and walk over the bridge - S. Maria dei Miracoli - Calle del Parsemolo già Biri - Campiello Widmann - straight on until you arrive at Fondamenta Nove, exactly at the vaporetto stop.

Ah yes, how long will it take. 15 minutes at the most. Definitely preferable to a 45 minutes vaporetto ride.

I think the vaporetto 41 is a circular anticlockwise route around Venice, which stops at the island of Giudecca, Piazza San Marco, Murano, Fondamenta Nuove and Piazzale Roma.

Kellyee21- Thanks for the input. Our tour will be taking in the sightseeing of Venice but they will only give us one free-day. I have a purpose for going to Murano but taking in Burano is an option.

If I can navigate it successfully I fully agree that walking is better. However, if I have problems a vaporetto ride will be my only option.

Do you mean that you will be on a tour in Venice and on one of the 4 days you will go to Murano?

I'm chuckling because we had an apartment not far from Fondamenta Nove last year, and despite DH having a very good sense of direction, we got lost going back to the apartment every single night. And we never ever made it in 15 minutes, even when we were least lost.

If you have one full free day in Venice, you should be able to cover every inch of Murano, three or four times.

Suggest you buy a map. Streetwise Venice worked well for me - even when I got "lost" on purpose, I had no trouble getting "found" again with the map.

Since my last message, I've decided to spend 2 hours shopping in Murano Isl(excl transporting to & from). Four hours all told.

Whatever time is left will be spent around Venice. Thanks a lot for the web page.

Not sure when you are leaving so you may not have time to do this.

I emailed the Italian Tourist Board in the USA and asked for maps and brochures. They sent great maps and they were all free. Be sure to mention you want a city map of Venice.

I had purchased a map of Venice before we went the first time and paid $8 or $9 for it. So now I email every country we plan to go to and ask for maps. You usually receive a nice assortment of maps and brochures.

I did get some lit from our Italian Tourism here in Canada. They are not giving any detailed street maps.

I borrowed a book from the library -
Fodor's See it Venice. It has wonderful detailed street maps on top of all one has to know about Venice.

Overall it is a great book to have.

Unless you're planning to lunch at Busa la Torre I should think an hour would suffice for Murano - its all glass shops & furnaces & once you've seen one.....there is a pretty church - San Donato but its a fair walk so I'd definitely go on to Burano & Torcello on the same day.
