Bad idea. Getting in and out of Venice is a pain in the ass involving a bus then a boat and waiting for both. We enjoyed staying in Venice and walking,
walking, walking especially at night
when it takes on a magicial quality.

Hope this helps.
We will be going to Venice also, and would like to stay in Venice-proper. However, it will be in the middle of our trip, and we will have a car. Does anyone know how we could handle the car situation? Is there parking? Is it safe to leave a car for a few days?

Absolutely stay in Venice. I've been there several times and there's nothing like dusk and dawn! My vote goes to Locanda Sturion, which has been on the Grand Canal about 100 yards from the Rialto Bridge since the 13th or 14th century. Wonderful rooms and service!
