Venice: Modest Hotels, Convents, B&Bs
I guess by now you have figured out I'm going to Rome, Florence and Venice in May 06 and I'm a bit slow to part with money.
Would appreciate your recommendations for a four night stay in mid-May 06. Hoping to pay around 120E per night for a double with a private bath and breakfast.
Is that realistic?

In February 2004 we rented the Carmine studio through Ca della Corte, a small hotel which also manages apartment rentals. Our studio was on the main floor overlooking a fairly quiet canal near S.ta Margherita.
There was daily cleaning and the cleaner brought supplies for a simple breakfast. Bath was smallish but modern and adequate; kitchen was very well equipped. there is a tiny courtyard terrace.
Overall we were very pleased with the accommodation and paid -- in the lowest season -- only 90 E per night. May would be higher -- perhaps quite a bit higher. Anyway here is the website:

A very nice B&B just off Piazza San Marco (and close to Fantasy Gelato for the best gelato in Venice!) is the Palazzo Duodo (all 3 suites have canal views and it is quite grand with anitque furniture). It is on the 3rd floor (4th if you count the ground floor) but there is a lift/elevator. You get your own key and come and go as you wish. I thought it was great. They can offer twin rooms as well as doubles which might be better for you with your son.

I have also rented apartments in Venice from

Their minimum rental is 3 nights, and they have apartments in every sestriere, from under 100 euros a night. Quite a few of the apartments for 2 have a master bedroom and a sofa bed in the living room.

including one in Venice. I've never stayed in one, but generally they seem to get good review from budget travelers. I did notice that many of them have curfews. The one they list in Venice is fairly pricey; I think 116euro for a double with breakfast, but you won't find many hotels that will match that, and Venice seemed to close up fairly early, so a curfew might not be a problem.
Other forums attract the budget traveler more than Fodors, so you might look at slow travelers, etc.

Pensione La Calcina is a lovely 3-star hotel. Depending on time of year and type of room it may be in your budget. It is deservedly very popular so reserve early. A nice breakfast is included in the room price, served on a patio over the Guidecca canal.

I was in Venice two months ago. Searched the web insideout for accommodation and came up[ with a 4* hotel across the road from the station in Venice Menstre (Best Western) E44 per night breakfast included. Got a 70% reduction on the real price. Cross te road and into the train that goes to Venice Island every few minutes. E1 (yes one euro) for 10 minute journey. Trains also return every few minutes. Great bargain. Stepped off the train and cross the road to the 'busboat' and off I wentwith my cheap daily ticket.

ok cato u want to go really cheap. in venice stay on the lido, there are water buses(vaparetto)from 6am til 11.30pm in & out of central venice & it is only about 20 mins.also restaurants etc are cheaper on lido then cos it's not july/aug!hotel i can recommend is www.villa-albertina on lido & as for florence if u want a cheapie stay ay campsite norcenni girasole at figline valdaro about 25 mins by train from florence. rome - stayed at hotel des artistes, v.good but also a hostel for cheap stays.check out their website.

Cato, I am also travelling on a tight budget and will be in Venice late June. I found this nice looking hotel in Venice, not far from San Marco, I have been quoted 90E a night (double) including breakfast and private bathroom if I pay cash. If I were to pay credit it is 100E. Venice: For something a little different try http://www.ciliota.it. Our neighbours stayed at -http://www.bbalessandra.com - and were very happy with it. Great breakfasts. There is also http://www.trinitabb.com but just check whether you have a private bathroom if this is important.

A couple of possiblities well within your price range. Both simple but adequate:
Hotel Ai Tolentini is an easy walk from either the train station or P. Roma.
Hotel Art Decó near the Accademia Bridge.
Locanda al Soffiador is on Murano--simple but pleasant rooms above a restaurant.
These are not luxury hotels, but not dumps either.

We stayed in Venice at a place called the Cortecampana - just a little bit off of Piazza San Marco. (http://www.cortecampana.com/indexing.htm ) It's a 4th floor climb up but the rooms are large and Riccardo who owns the place is very helpful and quite nice and often funny. It was not a luxury accommodation but quite adequate. We paid 120 Euros/night for the place but I'm guessing that this price is negotiable.
Did I mention that it was a four story climb up steep stairs?
When I go again, I'm going to look for a place near San Polo because it was much quieter in that part of Venice.

My wife and I stayed at Ca'Angeli B&B in Venice a month ago (first week in Nov. 2005). It was in a great location, very nice facilities, wonderful food, friendly staff, and priced very reasonably. Hope this helps!!
