Venice limit floating cruise ships size

I see that as of November 14 the cruise ships will be limited to only 106,000 tons

Only 106,000 tons!

And they talk of limited tour buses - has that happened?

Z Yes Venice is sinking under the weight of tourism!

There is an evolving thread about a non-Giudecca Canal routing (with a map) on Slowtrav.com.

I read on the BBC that while they are limiting them close to the centre that they are going to dig out a new canal for them to use....

I can't quite imagine tour buses having the same effect on a city of canals.

Well not the tour buses themselves but all the tourists - day trippers who may not even spend that much moolah - to keep the summer suffocating crowds down - or I think also floated is to charge an admission charge - that would be tantamount to being on the way to becoming a theme park.

I read in various sources that it was actually any ship larger than 96,000 tons.
Also they are going to limit the number of ship turnarounds per day from 9 currently to five per day.

It's a start, hope they keep going with this.

I dug this out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...t_cruise_ships

there are 51 ships that will not be allowed in, I'm not sure where they all normal cruise so it may not be a problem for the companies but Costa and Carnival get hit. See also the ships towards the bottom are being built.

The limit on cruise ships is encouraging.

I wonder what the people who depend on tourism to earn a living think of this.

well those people will still holiday so the tourist dollar will still be spent, but with other people. One man's gain is another man's loss.

I wonder how much the (thousands) of people coming off the ships really spend in a day. The hotel tax really must do more to support the city.

I suspect harbour fees will stay pretty much where they are and are the majority of what the ships bring ashore.

I have read that cruise ship passengers don't spend very much. The harbour fees must bring in a lot of money but who knows how much of that actually goes to the city of Venice.

Now watch the cruise lines advertise, 'book now for one of the last chances to see Venice from the deck of a large cruise ship'.

PalenQ, you wrote, "or I think also floated is to charge an admission charge - that would be tantamount to being on the way to becoming a theme park."

You mean like they did with Cinque Terre. Few realize that in peak season, the number of people allowed to walk the paths of Cinque Terre, now has to be limited.

Tourism sometimes has a lot to answer for.
