Updating this thread for those who are discussing the Dorsoduro siestre in Venice, particularly La Calcina.

Interested in opinions comparing Accademia with Calcina.

Chiara,
Loved your report. Hope you are still reading Fodors.

I'll be in Venice Oct 15 -14. I'd like to actually attned a musical event of some kind there (opera, concert, symphony) and I don't want to risk having all sold out it was in Paris. Any advice on reserving tickets then?

Hello Chiara,

Thank you for your most enchanting trip report. I literally fell deeply into it, hearing nothing around me, and quietly sat, at peace, until your beautiful words were no more.

Grazie, Tiff

Dear Everittp ~

When we stayed at the Accademia in March of this year, there was advertisement for " I Musici Veneziani"
i.e., "orchestra and singers in costume". It is performed at the Scuola Grande di San Teodoro, which I believe is in the Rialto siestre.

Actually, I recall seeing performers in costume in front of Galleria Accademia on several days as we walked past, presenting brochures to strollers.

We never did attend, our days and nights full ~ but, I think it would have been a nice alternative if you cannot get tickets to the Opera at Teatro La Fenice. We were there two nights before the opera season was to open, and I would love to have seen the reconstruction of it.

FYI --> here is the website for the above: www.imusiciveneziani.com

Enjoy planning your trip.

I am now in the process of planning a visit to the Riviera di Levante, Cinque Terre, and once again ~ Florence. But oh,....how I dream of Venice...........

Thank you for the wealth of info you provided about Venice.

I'm planning my first trip to Italy, but unfortunaltey my business does not allow too much time away. My thought was to stay in one place for a week and Venice seems to be a good choice.

You did mention striking out to other places during your week stay. Do you have more suggestions? From your lovely report it seems that one week would be fine for Venice.

Thank you!

If you are interested in day trips from Venice you may want to look into Avventure Tours. Groups are limited to 8 people and they are very reasonable.

Hello 4mimi, it was wonderful to reread Chiara's Venice trip report. It made the problems of the world go away for a few precious minutes.

4mimi, a week in Venice, IMH would be beautiful. If you do want to take a day trip was very nice and easy to get to city would be Pavoda (Padua in English). This historical city is almost due west of Venice and the train trips takes something like 35 minutes or so from Venice. Enjoy planning your trip, that is part of the fun. Best wishes.

Dear 4mimi ~

So many travelers seem to choose Rome and then Florence as first/second on their lists when considering a trip to Italy.
I did too ! And, that's exactly what we did. Our second trip was to visit our daughter who was abroad, and so we all met on the Amalfi Coast ~ an area none of us had been to before. Another Trip Report, I guess! So lovely.

But regarding Venice, we were so happy to finally be visiting her last March, and the length of our stay never seemed too long. In fact, I have a working list of places we did not visit within the city and hope someday to return.

Our side trips were to Padua to see the beautiful Giotto panels at the Scrovegni Chapel, and Vicenza to see Palladio's Villa Rotunda and to walk the city streets.

We rented a car in Venice and the drive was easy out of Venice but wacky on our way into the center of Padua.
We regret our confusing drive in and around Padua trying to locate the chapel, and wished we would have headed out to Verona, then home via Vicenza and Padua, as we were unable to have time to visit Verona.

Better to rent car for two days, or begin VERY early (and be mindful of visiting hours for everything you want to see)for the one day.

I'd like to have more time now to comment on some details of those side-trips, but as we speak, my daughter is packing and this weeked returning to the city she loves most, Florence.

Can you guess where my return trip to Italia will be this fall ?!

Happy planning......

I also enjoyed reading this beautifully written report that I must have missed first time around. I would spend a week or more in Venice any time. When you consider just visiting the outer islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello can use up a day...

Chiara, very nice report. Could you offer some details regarding Aquarama. We will be at La Calcina in about a month, and Aquarama was one of the restaurants that interested me in the area. Grazie.

Hi Chiara,
Your report brought back wonderful memories & a reminder that it's TOO LONG since I've been in this gorgeous part of the World.

One of my favourite "moments" was a concert in the Scuola san Rocco & wandering amongst the fantastic Tintorettos afterwards.

BTW - H.G. Morton's "A Traveller in Italy" is an absolute gem for history seeking travellers.

Dear maitaitom ~

Your Venice visit fast approaching ~ wanted to let you know our thoughts about the ristorante Aquarama, as you requested.

Our discovery of it came by way of a stroll to the supermercato Billa which is, from where you will be at La Calcina, due west along the Zattere.

Aquaram is by far the most modern and different from all of the other restaurants and trattorias we dined at in Venice ~ make that ALL of Italy, ever. We tend to choose the older, smaller establishments but Aquarama was attractive and could accommodate the five of us the next night. (We waited far too long for dinner one night, for ex., at the popular Taverna San Trovaso.)

There were very few customers dining there when we arrived. It was truly not yet "the season" ~ the restaurant was understaffed and not yet thinking about the crowds that would soon swell the city.
But after a bit of vino, we settled in for a good meal. Of note in my journal was the surprise of very good bread, most of the restaurants' bread previously had been airy and tasteless.
A nice calzone, grilled verdure, insalata, and a mushroom soup (served most fancifully, I might add) were all very good. Our entrees included a rigatoni, a very nice grilled beef filet, and rock lobster in a red sauce.

The space is a two-story affair ~ open, airy, more like one you'd find in the States instead of the tiny, cozier places where limoncello is often delivered "on the house" at the end of the meal.

Our favorites were Locanda Montin and the tiny Sardinian trattoria L'Incontro on the Rio Terra Canal, both of which are not far from your hotel in the Dorsoduro siestre.

Hope this helps with your dining plans. (I'm envious, and ...hungry!)
