...we did too - fun sitting at the window and watching the traffic on the
Grand Canal.

I didn't stay there, but there is what looks like a very nice hotel on the Grand Canal at the San Stae vaporetto stop, and very usefully for someone with only one night, the Alilaguna stops there so if you are flying in or out of Venice you can easily get in and out without too much hassle:

it's a very quiet spot but very well placed for the Rialto, San Marco etc. etc.

beautiful hotels on the grand canal...they tend to be the more expensive or luxury properties...but yes lots of them.

Pensione La Calcina looks out over the Guidecca canal. It's a pretty spectacular view.

also stayed at hotel galleria with its lovely views of pretty buildings across the canal. loved it... but i'm a good sleeper.

remember that the canals are the busy, main "roads" in this town... police sirens, vaparettos... there's lots of action (and noise.)

we stayed at a hotel on a small side canal once and it was a bit 'stinky' of stale water... so maybe keep to the main canal?? (maybe not the experience of others??? )

We stayed here last fall: http://www.hotelsaturnia.it/

We had a superior deluxe room. We asked for a room on the canal and that is what we got. It was a small canal so it wasn't too noisy. We could look down and see gondolas going by. The location was great and the staff was wonderful as was the breakfast. We'd definitely stay there again.
