We are looking for a hotel that's convenient to Venice Cruise Terminal for one night, before we embark on our cruise. After the cruise we'll spend a few nights somewhere more central to the main tourist areas, but at present we just want somewhere to put our heads between our flight from Nice and our departure.

Does anyone have any advice for us? 3 star would be fine; we don't need anything fancy for this stop. Di

How will you go from the airport to Venice? If you use alilaguna, there are a lot of possibilities:

If you use the bus, look for a hotel close to Piazzale Roma (Santa Croce quarter) and reach the cruise terminal from there by either a taxi or the people mover.

I don't get the comment that the Lista di Spagna is far away. It starts right in front of the train station, which is next to the Piazzale Roma.

So you want that di2315 walks from Piazzale Roma along several (more convenient) hotels and over a bridge (stairs!) to the railway station and (rather crowded) Lista di Spagna in order to sleep there and that he goes back the same way the next morning.
I don't see why!

I've taken a look at Hotel Spagna, and while I don't think it's the right choice for our overnight stay, it may be just right for the 3 nights after our cruise.

I am sorry, I didn't realize Di was an octogenarian and couldn't walk over a bridge.

Seems pretty stupid to travel to a city where one has to walk almost everywhere to get around.

I read my 2 posts again and agein, but I really don't understand what you mean!

neckervd, your comments weren't an attack rather they appeared to be quite sarcastic. In Venice, one walks over bridges,it's part of the territory, no big deal. I would want to be far away from Pizzale Roma if even for only one night.

I agree: bridges with steps (even the rather new Calatrava bridge!) are part of the territory.
Di2315 arrive(s) with luggage and asked for a hotel close to the Stazione Marittima. That shows me that they don't want ot do long walks with luggage.

If he doesn't use alilaguna, he arrives at Piazzale Roma. There are tons of quiet hotels just south-east of Piazzale Roma, closer and easier to reach than the Cannaregio quarter.

But I wouldn't go to these places if I would arrive by bus.

BTW: I often arrive at Venice by train, but I always try to avoid bridges (with my trolley) or distances of more than 500 metres and prefer therefore the quiet areas of Cannaregio Ovest (Hotels Stella Alpina, Dolomiti, Rosa, etc.)

For me, the location of Hotel Spagna would be one of the very last in all of Venice I would chose if I was spending more than one night-fine for an early departure by train, plane, or boat, but not for any other reason. I have experience--I have stayed at the Principe on the same street years ago on a package deal. I felt I spent too much time traveling to other parts of the city to see the sights I really wanted to see.

I have to say it didn't read as sarcastic to me -- neckverd was just answering the specific question.

The OP is not planning to sight-see on this part of the trip, and just wants a nearby convenient place for an overnight stay. Crossing fewer rather than more bridges seems a reasonable thing to recommend, as does not moving in a direction further away from the requested locale.
