Hi Vik,
When I travelled to Italy in 1996 I stayed in the Venice hostel that was located on Lido. I'm not sure if that hostel still exists - you could check the Lonely Planet/Thorn Tree site for info - Good luck!http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/

oooops - above poster refreshed my memory!
I stayed at the hostel located on Giudecca Island - not Lido! As far as I can recall it was fine and getting across the canal was no problem but it looks like you can avoid that by staying at some of the other hostels.
