We have stayed frequently in Dorsoduro, around Campo San Barnaba, and there are a few hotels and B&Bs near there. The area is good, easy to get to via the Ca’ Rezzonico vaporetto stop, and 25 minutes walk to San Marco.
A fair bit of night life, particularly in Campo Margerita which is close by.
I think that on booking.com, you can zoom in on the map to see what is there.
We have always used apartments, so can’t advise on hotels.

If you are brave enough for an apt, I can recommend this one. It’s close to San Marco and has views from two sides of canal.

I liked the Zattere / Dorsoduro part of the city, it's along the Giudecca canal. Convenient for transportation and walking to central sights but a bit removed from the hub-bub.

For restaurant and shop recommendations would be good to figure out where you are staying first.

Here is my favorite, Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo, located in a quieter neighborhood but close to Rialto and one minute walk from the San Stae vaporetto with no bridges. It may just fit your budget--take a look. It is popular with many on Fodor's.

This is the place I like - I've stayed there twice now, once in a double room that I got at an amazing rate, and once in a single that was surprisingly comfortable:

The only snag is that the rates for October seem to be roughly twice what I paid last February, even though that was in Carnevale. It's on the Orange Alilaguna line, taking roughly 40 mins from the airport, and is just round the corner [no bridges] from the Guglie Alilaguna/Vaporetto stop, with the Vaporetto stop San Marcuola [on the Grand Canal] not far away.

Only snag would seem to be the price.

You might check out the Hotel Residenza in the Castello district. It was the place my husband and I stayed
on our first visit to Venice (room was $37 - We enjoyed the neighborhood so much we usually stayed at hotels there
on subsequent visits. Our last few stays were at the Metropole... which is quite a different kettle of fish... but just around the corner.

Al Ponte Mocenigo! Ive stayed there both, by myself and with my husband. Great location, lovely premises and very nice owners. I think in October it could be around your budget.

If you can consider an apartment rather than a hotel, this place might work for you. I stayed there for a couple of weeks two years ago, and am returning for seventeen nights on 22nd September.

Looks like a nice place, Pete. I'm trying to wangle my way back to Venice before the end of the Biennale [having ended up with a spare ticket for each venue - don't ask!] but it won't be while you're there, sadly. Have fun! [I'm sure you will - how could you not?]

Yes - Ca Furlan looks great but didn't have the dates available I will be there.
Now narrowed down to Galleria Hotel and Centauro Hotels.

So - it looks like it's narrowed down to Hotel Galleria and Hotel Centauro.
If anyone knows anything about these - yay or nay - let me know.
In my price range, good reviews, looks like in decent locations.

I have stayed at Palazzo Odoni twice and love it. It's in your price range. It's about 10 minute walk from either the train station or Pizaa Roma (where buses from airport) - so easy for arrival and departure, but is on a quiet canal. The breakfast is amazing, the rooms lovely.

Galleria is rated higher on Trip Advisor (have you read the reviews and looked at photos of both places there?). I also like the location better.

Yes. Have looked and looked at lots of places now.
Have reserved this one but like sooooo many of them including one I just was recommended on this site - Palazzo Odoni.
In the past have made myself totally nuts and confused looking at everything.
Am trying not to get sucked into that again. Too anxiety provoking!
I think I will just stay with Galleria and call it a day. Will probably go to look at the other 2 I liked when I'm there.
You never know - maybe a return trip.
