Venice-Croatia and back
Hi, here's my dilemma. Need to go from Venice to Florence (1 overnight only to visit my friend--lived there for 13 yrs so no need to sightsee). Then to my father's town (Sant'Arsenio)in Salerno for 2 nights. Then to Dubrovnik to visit another friend, maybe up to Split for a brief visit and then I must return by myself to catch my return flight from Milan-Newark.My travelling companion will continue on to Germany by herself. Dates are leaving Venice on Saturday night May 27 and my current return flight is on June 5 (trying to extend to June 7 but no seats currently available). We can rent a car but I am afraid I will be the only one who can drive shift and I do not want to pay for an automatic! I am beginning to get stressed about my having to get to Milan by myself (I know Italy well it's just the fatigue of it all). Any suggestions??

The simplest way might be to take an overnight ferry from Split to Ancona and the train from there to Milan. The Jadrolinja ferry leaves at 21:00 and arrives is Ancona about 7:00. The train station is only about a mile from the ferry dock and there is an 8:15 direct train to Milan arriving there just after noon.

Jadrolinija (www.jadrolinija.hr) run Bari-Dubrovnik and Ancona-Split. Blue Line (www.bli-ferry.com) also run Ancona-Split.

Catama,
When you mentioned that your friend would be continuing on to Germany, I thought of this possibility.
On Sunday (June 4th), there is a HLX
(Hapzig Lloyd Express) flight from Dubrovnik to Munich at 9:40am. It arrives Munich at 11:30am and the current fare (with all taxes) is 71.64 euro.
From Munich, there is an express train from the Hauptbahnhof (main train station) at 13:30 (no change of trains) that arrives in Milan at 19:15.
Because it is a Sunday, there is currently a special fare of 29 euro available.
You wouldn't have to take the overnight ferry alone, and maybe your friend (who is already planning on traveling on to Germany) will want to fly to Munich with you.
We are using HLX for a September trip to Croatia, via Munich from Philadelphia.
