Venice and the Grand Canal

I am considering taking advantage of an E-saver from Philadelphia to Venice with a friend from Oct 9th to Oct 16th. I flew in and out of Venice in 2006 and noticed that in early October the canal waters did rise. If we went on these dates should we expect to need water proof footwear? Just to throw a wrench in…or should we go to Barcelona instead?? Any advice is appreciated.

As you have noted, the acqua alta can be in Venice in October. It will hard to predict until you are there. Even if there is some water, it's unlikely that it would be a record flood. I'd just go and if you want boots by them there.

I spent way too much time on this issue last October. This is not to say that it couldn't happen.

In any case, we had glorious weather.

Was there at the same time last year. While the high water bridge material was stacked in the main square there was no problem with high water. The weather was just fine for touring. The risk is worth the reward.

Hi T,

You are not supposed to go into the canals.

Enjoy your visit to Venice.

The flooding is caused by the tides which follow a fortnightly cycle: the tides are highest just after the new moon and full moon. There is a full moon on 14 October, so the highest tides will be around 15-16 October.

Thank you for all your replies. I have not yet fallen into the Canal but my girlfriend did and it is reported to be a memorable olfactory experience even when you are a non-sober college junior. And buying boots in Venice...just one pair??

Raised platforms are set up in popular that flood regularly. You probably won't need to bring boots. Wait and see.
