Uzès as a base

I'll be spending three weeks in France next September: Paris first, then a week in the Dordogne and another one in Provence. Thanks to the information I found on this board, I've booked a hotel in the Marais and an apartment near Sarlat.

For the last part of my trip, after much research, I found an apartment that meets my needs just outside Uzès. I'm wondering if anyone in the Fodorite community has used Uzès as a base. It seems to be a lovely, interesting place. Can anyone comment on it?

Many thanks.

Uzes is lovely and a good stop between the two great but different areas of France. Gerard Depardeieu's film Cyrano de Bergerac was filmed there. In July and August, Horse lovers can visit (outside Uzes) the stallions at the national stud farm, Les Haras National d'Uzes. It was on tues and fri at 3 but that was a fw years ago.

I agree--Uzes is lovely. It is a slow-paced village/town with a refined atomosphere. Nice shops--not too touristy.

My husband and I have fond memories of its pretty park that sits on a walled terrace overlooking the adjacent valley.

It has interesting streets to wander , a small castle and France's answer to the "Leaning Tower of Pisa."

Charming !!

I like Uzes and love to browse around the town and shop at the open market.

Uzes is very close to Pont du Gard, Nimes, Avignon and is surrounded by small quaint, picturesque old villages..

The Ducat of Uzes is I believe the oldest of France..
My sister lives only few miles from the town at Mejannes Le Clap, a small village on the hills, very popular as one of the best Centre Sportif in France.
The Gard region is very pretty, there are luscious hills, caves, and trees everywhere, also is not congested and popular like Provence..

The medicinal herb garden in Uzès is fascinating, as is the tower with the scratchings by prisoners there. It's a lovely town. It will be a grand base for visiting the area. Go for it!

Yes it a lovely place . We stayed there for a week in September and it was a good time to be there. Do try to be there at the weekend...there is a fabulous food market in the village square on Saturdays and the same site has a flower market on Sundays.Lots of nice trips can be done from there too.

Thank you all so much for your comments. Uzès seems to be kind of town/village I'm looking for: Interesting and slow-paced, refined atmosphere, nice shops, not too touristy. I'll go ahead and book the apartment.

My husband and I lovelovelove Uzes. It is our "dream" town in the South of France.

And it is well-located for visits to the Western edge of Provence, to Languedoc, Arles, Nimes, Aigues Mortes and the Camargue.

Rather envious here. Where are you staying in the Marais?

Elle: Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc on rue de Jarente. It's had good reviews on this board and it's also included in Fodor's Hotels and Country Inns of Character and Charm in France.

Ah--our friends stayed there in April and we stopped by to check out their room, which was pretty and spacious.

Plus, it's right near the Place du Marche Ste. Catherine, which I think is one of the sweetest squares in Paris . . . should be just lovely in September.

Hi,
I am jealous. Last summer we rented a gite outside of Uzes, in St. Quintain the Potter. I loved our apartment, the little village and Uzes is wonderful. You will have a fabulous time. Uzes was our favorite of all the towns we saw in Provence.

Yipper: Uzès indeed seems to be an interesting village. I'll write a trip report when I get back. Thank you for posting.
