Correction to above post - the list applies to handbaggage from the UK not to the UK

For passengers traveling to and from the United States, the United Kingdom, as well as all domestic Canada flights effective 12 noon ET, liquids or gels in containers of any size will not be permitted to be brought onboard by passengers as carry-on baggage.

Due to heightened security screening by authorities, it is recommended that customers reduce carry-on baggage as much as possible.

In addition, for passengers traveling from the United Kingdom only, all airlines including Air Canada, are subject to new security measures announced today by British authorities, whereby carry-on cabin baggage will not be permitted on flights from the U.K. until further notice. Further details are available from British Airports Authority (BAA) at www.baa.co.uk.

Happy Cheesehead...I was so proud of myself for searching for the right baggage dimensions and all to pass the carryon limits...I just bought them 3 weeks ago..I could easily return them now and use my Briggs & Riley big honker of a pull behind...the money I saved will pay for my trip insurance! But, I was so proud of my carryons...may never see them after I get on that plane!

However, from reading this and the recent post about Continential, it seems that carry on bags ARE allowed from the US to to the UK (and if you are going to another place in Europe via connection, you'd have to check your carryons in the UK) but not from the UK to the US. So you can take carryons from US to UK ... is this how others read it?

I'm flying to Italy 8/19 on Alitalia and I refuse to cancel - I've been planning this trip for so long and I will not let the terrorists win! I will change how I pack though - I guess the toiletry bag goes in the checked bag and no big water bottle.

I arrived in Paris last July the same day of the London tube/bus bombings and I was in London the day of the attempted bombings. I felt safe at that time and I refused to let the terrorists ruin my travel plans! I had a great time and fantastic memories.

I am thankful to the British intelligence authorities who discovered this plot and that we aren't discussing the possible horrific events that may have unfolded.

Newly amended AA language -

<i>Effective immediately all cabin baggage must be processed as checked baggage and carried in the hold of all passenger aircraft departing from or connecting through airports in the United Kingdom (UK). <b>This policy also applies to any aircraft departing the United States traveling to the UK.</b></i>

So UK rules (baggies only, no hand luggage) now applies to incoming UK flights as well as outgoing.

Just a reminder that I'm sure all of you know already. Since we can no longer carry on water bottles, at least for the time being, do not under any circumstances drink the airplane water. It is unsanitary. Drink wine, soda, juice, but if the airplane can't serve you bottled water, you are better off not drinking it at all.

Interesting - I checked the United site and they have teh same as AC - ie no liquids to UK, very restricted from UK

And Contental says:
Continental Airlines advises passengers that no items of hand baggage can be carried on board any aircraft departing any UK airport. The UK Government has advised that this instruction will apply to all airlines operating from UK airports.

Wonder whether the airlines are operating differnet policies - or someone's website wrong

Airline water is unsanitary? I guess that is a good reason to justify that extra glass of wine - but my airline water comes out of a bottle

I'm flying to London with my husband and 2 teens in 2 weeks. Not worried a bit. If the same restrictions are in place, I think I will actually enjoy the simplicity. The only thing I will miss are my flip flops I change into when going through screening.

My husband and I are traveling on 9/12 to Europe and other then re-thinking packing we are ready to go. We also traveled 9/15 the year of the WTC. We were ready to go then also. We only needed the airports to open and we were off.

As JoeTro said, the only confusing part of the new policy is that on the US-London leg of our trip we can have carry-ons. But the London-Vienna, and Vienna-London, and London-US legs we cannot have any. So it will probably be easiest to just not bring a carry-on on the US-London leg just to make baggage and security easier, or we need to figure out how to check the carry-on once we reach London. The only thing I will miss will be books, magazines, and gum (air pressure issues).

skachel, For the moment it depends on which airline you're flying into the UK. BA's policy is like AA, all hand luggage must be checked on US to UK flights. Virgin's website says carry on is still ok (minus liquids). That could change, obviously, as events continue to evolve.

Leaving for Paris with hubby and the two kiddos on 9/2/06. It didn't even cross my mind to rebook or cancel. It is my great hope that by then we will be able to bring water bottles on, but if not I'm sure we will manage -- a few screwdrivers will put the kids right to sleep. (KIDDing)

Tara, GO! I'm departing for the UK on 9/13 (into Manchester) and returning from London on 10/2. I'm taking note of packing requirements, and while I'm not happy about travelling without my iPod, I will just adapt. At least we can pack things in checked luggage in the hold. Keep watching....those restrictions may change over the next month. Who knows?

And a big salute to British authorities for uncovering this terrorist plot. SOLDIER ON!

As long as you're handing out kudos for &quot;uncovering&quot; the plot-you should give kudos to to the folks to whom the kudos REALLY should be given-the Pakistanis. Without them, NOTHING would have been uncovered-the western world's fight against terrorism would truly be terrifying without their help-because the intelligence in order to to uncover the plot simply would not exist-it was the Pakistanis who picked up one of the plotters at the Afghan border who spilled the beans on this latest plot. So don't forget that-it's not the Brits, but the Pakistanis.

Why can't you travel with your IPOD going to the UK? Have they banned electronics, or it's just you couldn't travel with it b/c you still can't take carry on luggage (I'm still a bit confused on this, so no carryons either to or from the UK even if it's your final destination)?
