I will be going in and out from Newark to Gatwick on Continental in mid Sept, coming back in early Oct. And I will NOT be changing my plans.

My biggest concern is the restriction on carry-on - A seven plus hour flight w/o MP3, computer or paperback

We're leaving for Italy tomorrow. Yikes. Scary.

P.S. Have to now repack everything I so carefully packed for carry-on only.

ma23peas-We are scheduled to leave for Italy on September 8th. Lousy terrorists that wish to scare us will not be successful. The worst of course is what the carryon situation will be since we do not check baggage! Hopefully things will have calmed before we travel. Bellastarr, when and where in Italy for you? 29 days and counting down! Shirley

There is an old Asian poem that goes something like this...

"Into what world have we awoken?"

Here in Seattle they are saying no liquids in carry-on except breastmilk and medicines.

I leave Sept. 19th. for Europe. I will NEVER change my plans for terrorist.
In 2001 we left on Sept. 22 for Europe. If I stay home, they win.

I hope they have plenty of bottled water on board for us if they wont let us bring our own. I can buy shampoo and other item when I get there. It will be fun trying to figure out all the HABA items.

I agree with you, not having my IPOD wouldnt be good. 9 hours and 45 minutes is a long time. I will call my Dr. and get a sleeping pill.

My wife phoned a few minutes ago from her seat on a NW SEA-MSP flight (still at the gate, delayed ~ 45 min - so far) to say that it was chaos before security, okay after. I expect by tomorrow things will be more calm.

We have several passes through London airports planned over the next couple of weeks (a couple on AA, one of the 3 airlines named by the UK officials as the targets) but I'm just not gonna get whipped up about it. As with Sept 11, one thing that happens is that pax on planes start really paying attention to other pax, and the airline personnel are given wide license to be proactive in asking people what they're doing.

Frankly my biggest concern is that I've got trips where bag transfer at LHR or LGW will be needed, and the prospect of a whole lot more hold luggage being in the system does not inspire confidence, given the pre-existing ineptitude at those airports.

Look for a lot of near-new laptops and mobile phones turning up on E-Bay UK.

I've been planning next month's Ireland trip for over a year and I'm not planning on rescheduling anything. I still feel air travel is safe and don't want to let terrorists start dictating my vacations. My concern today is a B&B owner who responded to my booking confirmation e-mail with an 'I'm very sorry, I have you down for 3 nights but Sun-Wed instead of Sat-Tues!!' Uh-oh! I guess that's why it's a good idea to double and triple confirm reservations! I guess I'm off to find a B&B that can take me for one night on short notice...

Logic would suggest that it is less likely that there will be an incident this week, as "the jig is up" and everyone's on alert. Any planned action would obviously be postponed in this situation.

I would think that the long-term effect (i.e, one month out) will be to require some additional identification/time (database crosschecking) for boarding.

Flying is now becomming ridiculous.
No hand luggage...no liquids.
This is crazy. Whatthe heck will parents travelling with small children do without the option of carrying hand luggage and juice?
Cellphones must now be checked.

I wish there were roads to everywhere so I could just drive instead of flying!

I have a trip scheduled with my mom to siena leaving 9/1 and returning 9/11... not really sure if i will reschedule or cancel yet. I think I might feel less stressed on a return flight on a different date. Doesn't matter when I go though,I'll feel a little scared. My trip is for business and they (the company) are encouraging us not to travel right now and allowing us to change or cancel our plans if we feel we should. That sort of feeds that gut feeling that I just shouldn't fly right now. There are other reasons to cancel...I'll be 18 weeks pregnant then -- a carry on would obviously make my life on the flight more comfortable. i need snacks like every hour or I get sick to my stomach. The possible flight delays, longer security and customs lines are not going to be as easy for me as it would be if I weren't pregnant. I'd hate to put off this great trip, but I'll have an opportunity to attend this meeting and take my mom in '08. Maybe aviation terrorism won't be in the headlines then.

I just don't know yet. Like a previous poster said, I'm going to wait 24-48 hours to think about everything and see what happens before I go cancelling anything.

Mothers always surprise you! I thought I would receive a call asking me to cancel my trip....she called this morning and (she's already had 3 calls from relatives concerned about us) instead of telling us to cancel, she's going out to get a passport for herself and my father...they're planning a rescue in case we get stranded over there! Whew! Knowing your mother is not against you goes a long way in making a peaceful trip!

As an aside...she brought up an interesting tidbit. August 22nd has been discussed on several news programs here as being the next "big event"...apparently, 8/22 is the date in Muslim history that they believe Mohammed traveled to Jerusalem and Heaven on a winged horse. There is speculation that this was the date they were going to carry out the "winged" assault on these 10 planes. Praying for that day that plans have been completely foiled.

I'm flying tonite out of EWR to FCO, and yes while concerned about safety--I'm not even thinking about cancelling. My concerns are more about the looooong lines I will be facing at check in and the fact that this will be the first time in over 30 years that I will have to check my one piece of luggage - a small carry on. (I did think about tossing my toothpaste, hairspray, shampoo etc-- but then decided not).

First class to Italy Sept 5th and I'm going!! Thanks goodness I wear powder makeup! But I guess no carrying back any Brunello wine on the return trip, that is disappointing. But a safe journey is all we can all hope for.

We are going to Las Vegas on 8/26 and Southern Spain on 9/11. I don't plan on cancelling. I was in Madrid on 3/11 and my baby girl lives and works in downtown Manhattan. Life goes on. I'm mad that I saw this as breaking news at 1:30 and when I woke up this morning, it was still breaking news, and I'm so thankful that the intelligence is so good and the devils were captured, but the media just wants us scared and tuned in! I am REALLY unhappy with the restrictions. I thought when they took my tweezers, things were a little out of hand, but reason returned and now we are going to have to figure out how to brush our teeth on a transatlantic flight with no toothpaste!

What? Put the Brunello in with your checked baggage. They have special styrofoam containers just for that purpose.

I fly Edinburgh to Bristol tomorrow; home on Sunday. KMR flies to Moscow on Monday, home Friday. To Houston the following Monday, home Staurday; and we both go to France on the 8th.

We'll be cancelling nothing. To do so would let them win.

I fly at the end of September and there is no way I am cancelling anything. This is what the terroists want, and if we start giving in, then they win.

One poster said she may wait until '08 and travel (when she has another conference for work) and hopefully then terrorist plots aren't in the headlines. You have to do what makes you comfortable, however, with media today there is alway ssomething in the newspapers about terrorists. I wrote a paper on terrorism 8 years ago in Unviversity before 9/11 and it was a problem then just like now, we just hear about it a lot more than ever before.
If you keep waiting until there are no scary headlines, then you'll never travel. Don't let these extremists win. You have to live your life.

I'm traveling on BA on London (Heathrow) to Berlin Tegel 8/21. Do you think I can still bring a laptop as a carry-on?
