Urgent: lodgings within 1 hour of Fiumicino airport
We're visiting Italy in January, staying mostly in monasteries and are having trouble setting up a place for the last 3 nights (Jan 16, 17, 18). We want to stay within an hour's drive of Fiumicino-Leonardo da Vinci airport. We are seniors who want to be comfortable but we are on a budget. Ideas? A small town or interesting rural site would be perfect because we are driving and have to be able to park the car.
Thanks so much for your suggestions. Ellen

We used the town of Orvieto as our last night in Italy. I think it was about an hour's drive to the airport,as they are both north of Rome. It is a very nice town, lovely cathedral, and just off the autostrada. I don't remember where we stayed, but I know we found the hotel in Rick Steves' book. We had an early flight, and had to get up and going very early that day, to ensure arriving in plenty of time to find the rental car return, etc. Just an idea.

This is probably farther than you would like, but we drove from Orvieto to FCO the morning of our departure. It took about 1-1/2 hours, including some rush hour traffic. If you are coming from the north anyway, Orvieto is a very charming and wonderful place.

FCO is not north of Rome. It is more or less west/southwest. And you definitely need to allow more than 1 hour if you are driving during morning traffic. You don't have to go through Rome, though -- there is a ring road.

Ellen, with a car and if you are willing to be 1:40 from FCO, then look at www.locandarosati.orvieto.tr.it A great location to explore that region and a lovely B&B with very good food all served family style with the other guests. It is hard to get much closer to FCO and still have much to see.

Such a help you are. We are looking seriously at the area around Ostia and Cerveteri because we have a car and it makes it possible to drive out away from Rome but take public transport into Rome! Ellen

Last Feb. we stayed at the Riveria, in
Fiumicino. It was a nice modest hotel and in the early AM it took us about 15 minutes to get to the airport. It is very well marked and the staff were quite nice to us. We were also able to walk up the street to a nice local resturant and have a nice meal. Booked it from their website.
