That is scary--hope he's doing better. I was sick as a dog for 2 days in Belgium a few years ago. Really, really had me upset as I am a huge beer lover--there I was in one of the beer heavens of the world, and even the thought of a beer made me retch!!!!!

I'm pretty sure it was something I picked up from a doorknob somewhere as my wife was perfectly fine--people everywhere, please, please wash your hands, especially after using the toilet.

anna, I can just imagine your anxiety regarding your husband's health. I hope he recovers quickly from his illness.

Your situation has brought out some very helpful information for those of us who were unaware of calling 112. I hope it's never needed but I'm putting that number in my travel essential information.

wishing your husband and speedy recovery, Deborah

Wash your hands and have him do the same after the toilet and after vomiting. Also wash hands before eating or doing anything involving the mouth. This is the #1 proactive thing you can do to stop the spead.

You can disinfect surfaces in the house using the proper spray (e.g. Lysol in the US). Or use a good old fashioned mix of 90% water and 10% bleach. Doing this will prevent the spread to you and it will get your mind off of worrying too much b/c you will be busy being proactive. Pay attention to the flush handle, knobs on door and sinks/tubs, handrails, and even counter tops. Go all out and you will feel better & possibly prevent yourself from getting it. Don't forget to disinfect the cups and kitchenware too.

Virus and bacterium are funny things, sometimes ppl appear to be immune (or lucky) while the rest of the family is sick as a dog! And two ppl CAN eat the same thing from the same plate and one may not show symptoms while the other has full blown illness; I won't go into the epidemiology/pathology of how this can happen but it does and it throws ppl off when trying to retrace their steps.

Keep giving small amounts of water until he can hold it down and wash your hands afterwards PLEASE!!!

Anna - hope by now things have settled down a bit and your husband is stabilizing. Can sympathize with your panic as it is awful to be sick and in a foreign country.

Wishing him a fast recovery and good health to you in the remainder of your holiday.

Thanks lincasanova for the tip about the 112 number.

It suddenly dawned on me that it sounds like a classical case of what used to be called a crise de foie. When I had it, it was not associated with food poisoning. The regimen for a few days was plain biscottes and broth.

After my incident I too was told to just have a bit of broth from time to time and a few crackers for a few days if memory serves me right.

Anna if your husband is not over the vomiting do get him to the hospital as he no doubt will need an IV as I did. But just remembered something else, quite some years ago a cousin of mine had the same problem. The doctor gave her suppositories for her vomiting problem as if she took any medication by mouth she would have thrown it up.

Please don't get on a plane if you are contagious. I returned from Nice on April 8 and on the night of April 9, I began getting sick. There were so many people on the plane sneezing and most not even bothering to cover their mouths. I figured I would get sick. And that I did. I am just now beginning to feel good again. I have coughed and hacked for 2 weeks. And worst of all I was extremely tired and I usually do not stay tired for long-(high energy person.)

Yes - it is best to make arragements to stay put when you are sick. It is better for the patient and better for the world around.

A million years ago, 1980, I was on a school trip to France and got so sick in Cannes. I never even saw the city. Both my roommate and I were vomiting the entire day. We both talked about calling home and going home. Very hard on vacation.
I hope he has a quick recovery and that you don't get it.

I'm surprised an MD gave an oral med for vomiting - since the patient usually can;t keep anything down. If he's been vomiting that violently for that long he probably needs not only an injectable med but also to be rehydrated in a hospital - or he may feel weak/dizzy for a couple of days. If he can keep anythng down now see if you can get the local equivalent of pedialyte to help rebalance his electrolytes (just water won;t do it).
