Update on some hotels

We are contemplating another visit to Switzerland later this year and there are a couple of hotels we will probably stay in that we have visited before. However, it has been a couple of years since our last visit to Switzerland and even longer since our last visit to a couple of these hotels. So I thought I would ask if anyone has stayed at any of them recently and can give me an up to date review regarding whether they are still up to snuff.

We will fly into Geneva, arriving early afternoon and plan to spend two nights to get over jet-lag and visit a favourite restaurant. We will stay at the Hotel de la Cigogne there.

From Geneva we will take the train to Gstaad for 5 nights at the Palace Hotel. We will be hiking in the surrounding area during that time.

Then we are thinking of heading over to the Bernese Oberland and Hotel Giessbach for perhaps 4 nights. If we can't get a decent room (we won't book anything except the Cigogne ahead) we will go with our backup the Regina Grand in Grindelwald. We will do more hiking in this area. That's our major attraction to Switzerland other than chocolate. ;-)

Last time we stayed in the Regina one night and then hiked from there to the Giessbach with an overnight at the Hotel Faulhorn.

From the Bernese Oberland we will head for Basel for just a night before catching a flight from Basel-Mulhouse to Scotland to visit family. In Basel we will expect to stay in the Les Trois Rois, hopefully with a river view room and enjoy dinner on the patio.

Geneva - Cigogne
Gstaad - Palace
Bernese Oberland - Giessbach or Regina in Grindelwald
Basel- Les Trois Rois.

Anyone have a recent visit to any and comments on how they found their stay?

I suggest that you stroll into a bar and order a glass of wine or two. After a decent interval, ask the barman if he/she knows any half-way decent hotels.

Too easy ...

Define "up to snuff" and perhaps you'll get some answers.

Have you decided that all those people...ALL of them are totally unreliable when it comes to their ratings? Have you ever contacted any reviewers and asked specific questions.

The Regina in Grindelwald; we stayed across the street from that hotel a couple weeks ago. I watched from our balcony as the various tour bus groups got out to check in.

We had a definite housefly problem in our accommodation and I didn't see any screens on the Regina windows.

Will you have a car?

I wouldn't stay at House of Dark Shadows Geissbach without a car.

Have you looked at the Schonegg in Wengen?

I hate Grindelwald.

Tour buses are a bad sign Dukey. That's a definite 'not up to snuff' indicator. There were no tour groups the last time we stayed there. Times change.

In that case if we have a problem at Giessbach(I really don't expect there to be one) then we may have to go to alternabe B in the Hasli.

Pepper, I've stayed at the Giessbach several times both with and without a car. I don't find that a problem. Generally we go out hiking for the day and there are several ways we can go directly from the hotel. As you can probably imagine, hiking from there has far less people than from Grindelwald or Wengen.

In any case, thinking about it now, we'll probably go up to the Hasli if Giessbach doesn't have a room we want.
