suppose I'm fortunate enough to find a young lady who digs me, will the alarm go off if I let her in/out through the emergency exit!?! should i remain calm and throw off hostel security by pointing them in a different direction when they come racing down the hall? at 37 I have this all planned out, I'll lay my coat underneath a car and my sweetie can hide until the search is called off.

Ken, I think the French are a little more liberal when it comes to these matters. I think it would depend upon the hotel you are staying in and the lady you bring to the hotel. If the hotel has certain high standards and the young lady may look as if she would detract from the image the hotel is trying to project, you may get a comment from the management. If you and your lady friend are both discrete and tasteful, there should be no problem. If your lady friend decides to stay with you in the hotel, then you may get questions. But if she is just "visiting for a night or two, you should not get charged.

Even if you do not think she is a prostitute, you should be very careful with your belongings. I have friends who have been to Europe and have met Europeans in bars, on trains, and have taken a lady back for the night to wake up the next morning and find they have been robbed. So take these warnings very seriously. Sometimes scam artists are looking for Americans who are naive and gullible.

Best of Luck and be careful. If she is really nice, go to her house instead. You may get a free meal!!!!

FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD FOLKS WE HAVE A 37 YEAR OLD MAN ON OUR HANDS WHO NEEDS HELP!!! STOP PIDDLING AROUND AND LETS PUT OUR BRAINS TOGETHER!!!!!!
ok here is my proposal
Try the emergency exit door as i said! if its rainin and you care then scrap that idea cause ya don't want her lying in a pool of grease while hostel security have the search party out. Now, if it is raining then go to option B which is to just fess up and ask if you can wash breakfast dishes to cover the extra cost. If security doesn't go for that you can offer a bribe and if that doesn't work ask try to get some cash wired to you from your supervisor at Walmart.
Cheers

I was 'fortunate' in both Rome and Florence and noone said anything. I didn't have to pass the front desk in Rome to get to my room, but I did in Florence. I suppose different places might have different policies about such things. You should know that it is a requirement that the hotel staff see the passport of anyone staying in the room so you probably don't want to draw the fact that someone is spending the night with you to their attention.

ken,
Leslie has a point re: being careful of your belongings. And, as I tend to worry about the health as well as the safety of others, let me add my 2 cents' worth - please make sure you have protection with you. Enjoy your trip.
ja

A few years ago I was staying at the Quirinale in Rome on vacation by myself. I am female, was in my twenties and most people thought I looked more like I was in my teens. I had a single room and was there for a few nights and the front desk staff knew who I was. One night I was going to have a visitor - a friend (just a friend at the time) - driving in late at night to see me before I flew back home the next day. It would be hours before he would arrive so I was in the lobby talking to the hotel staff and then I went to sit in the lounge and eventually fell asleep. The man at the front desk suggested I go up to my room and he would call me when my friend arrived. A

(continued...) At 4am my friend arrived and when I got down to the lobby he was in the bathroom but the front desk man said "He can't go up to your room." I shot him a look, but I think it was more a confused look than anything because it was never a plan that he would go up to my room. Now this was at 4am and nobody else was around so anyone entering the hotel was noticeable and he knew I had a single room so I don't know if it was because I only paid for a single or it was a security kind of issue or a more personal/concern thing on his part. So in answer to Ken's question.... they may notice.

To the gentleman who leaves his messages, but not his name...Sorry, buddy, I guess I'm just not as experienced as you and I've never been to Europe before. Things can be different. The reason I even asked this in the first place was because a friend at work (a woman) told me about her experience in London. She was staying in a small hotel, met a man and one thing led to another, he spent the night in her room, left early the next morning and when she went to check out, the clerk very nasty, told her she had to pay for a double AND that she could be prosecuted for trying to DEFRAUD an innkeeper. Thanks again to those who gave me good advice.

Can't believe this has gotten to 32 posts--why I actually clicked to see what's what. Refuse to use my own name around this bunch of snipers but do want to add for Ken that most better hotels/larger hotels in Rome and Paris charge the same for one or two people in the room. Unless you are specifically requesting one of their" singles" (generally smaller rooms with a single bed). Just inquire of the hotel before you book. As to the passport requirements--we are allowed guests!!!

I'm going to have to be a bit ambiguous (names & places) due to the Moral Majority sheep.
I had met someone in May 2000 and upon revisiting this beautiful city in May 2001 we spent numerous nights together. More precisely - he stayed with me at the hotel. I was concerned the hotel might charge me - they didn't. I ordered up room service - we had espressos on the balcony overlooking the -------- river. It was obvious I had someone staying the evenings with me. I took precautions - puttng credit cards + passport in safe hiding - had plenty of condoms. No problems from the front desk - just be discreet.
As for the uptight Puritans on this board - too many freaks, not enough circuses.
